G wagen and GL model
Does anyone know about the snow driving capabilities of the G-wagen vs the GL-model ? I'm talking about traction/handling in mud/snow, NOT POWER.

Tires - it's all about the tires!!! My G63 can't drive in snow because of its performance tires. Luckily I have other 4x4s to drive when it's nasty. Put snow or even AT tires on it and it would be just fine. This goes for all cars - a Huracan would be great in snow/ice with the right tires.

Yes, this is a serious question considering that Mercedes pitched the GL as the successor to the G-Wagen. One would assume that Mercedes would aim at making the "successor" a more "capable" truck/SUV off Asphalt and Autobahn setting. I am asking about offroad comparison so PLEASE DISREGARD the AMG versions of the G-wagen.

As for off-road capabilities, I'll repeat, thew G destroys the GL - regardless it's AMG or not. Actually, the lack of side exhaust tips and smaller tires (higher side wall) on the non-AMG makes it even more capable than the AMG version. Think of rock climbing.
The GL is an elevated station wagon.

I loved my GL550 but more for a daily driver road car .
Traded to a G550 Edition Select .No comparison the G is the ultimate off roader with decent road manners .The Gl was exactly the opposite . So its all up to you . What is more important .

I think ekusi wants us to tell him that the GL is as good as a G.
That being said, with proper ice&snow tires, the GL will do just fine on snow and mud.
You have nothing to worry about, go ahead and buy a GL.

Actually it had more to do with their price vs capability and curiousity. I have wanted a G-Wagen since the first time I drove the 300 GD in Africa. It belonged to a friend of my dad's. This was in 1984..... but shelling out $60,000 makes you weigh the odds intelligently. I'm not a millionaire yet. But thanks for your input Mr. G.

The experience in a GL and G is not the same, as I am sure, you already know.
Like I said, the GL will do just fine in ice and snow as long as you have the right tires. Mud too, as long as it's not meter deep.
Don't forget another monetary factor with the G: fuel.
