I love my 2016 gl350
Mpg

Did 22.6 mpg at 60 mph on strip from DC to NYC, but I started hitting traffic and the mpg started declining so I took a pictures at 22.1 for the record. Note: I only use 93 octane gas. Is that good?
I used to get 25.5 mpg on my R350 for the same trip. So the diffrence on the Gl450 is only 18%. NOT BAD!
I can not upload a picture from my iPhone as a proof. I'll do it later.

My personal record was 18.6 mpg LOLLL!

And I wasn't trying to hit the gas too hard.

That is40% higher!
I use about $ 150 wort of gas per month.
Your car would save me about $ 60 a month.
Considering the additional initial+maintenance cost, I rather keep my
2009 GL450.

Here's how the math worked for me. My wife drives ~18K miles a year. She used to have an LR3 which got 14mpg combined (we usually got 12 city, 16-17 highway). The GL350 gets about 22 combined (16-17 city, 26-27 hwy). Assuming 18K miles, $3.90 for gas, $4.20 for diesel, I calculate an annual fuel cost of $5,000 for the LR3, and $3,400 for the GL350. So a $1,600 a year fuel savings for me - that's why I bought the GL350. Your numbers may vary. I know there are other factors to consider since I'm comparing two different vehicles, but $1,600 is a very significant factor.

Diesel here in Virginia is averaging .70 cents higher vs 87! Which I only run 87 in my escaldade, maybe the GL450 & GL550 require 93 so that would make since only being .30 cents higher.

I used to run 93 in the LR3. I think it was required - it had the 300HP Jaguar V8

Couple thoughts.

#1. If anybody here has this SUV and trying to save couple hundred a year on a fuel bill - you probably driving the wrong car. Try to get to Toyota RAV4 or something...

#2. If I would lease - I'd get GL450 because of better lease deals.

#3. If I buy - I get GL350 because of high resale value and reliability of diesel engine compared to gasoline.

P.S. If I lease - I put only 87 gasoline to all of my cars after first 1000 miles. I don't care what is going to happen with this car after lease return.

I got 25.7 on my 4hr trip from NJ to upstate NY averaging 80, gotta love diesels. If ur using 87 octane in an engine which requires 91 or higher you are sacrificing performance and gas mileage.

Now is this true ? This seems like a never ending debate, does 93 gas really save gas mileage ?

On another note what do people put in there GL450 ? Is putting 91 really good enough ? Does 87 really make much difference in GAS used ? Is 93 really needed ?

I filled up my new GL450 with 91 and actually paid $91 if I would of done 93 I would of probably paid over $100 this is for a Tank of gas !!!!

You really don't know? If a car engine is configued and REQUIRES 93 Octane, then ONLY put 93 octane otherwise the ECU will pull timing and you will LOSE performance and mpg with the way the engine will operate.

It can also damage your engine too I believe. 91 Octane if I'm not wrong is standard only in California so if you're in California, then you're good. The engine can adapt to 91 octane without any problem. But anything lower is BAAAAD!

Next, I'm going to hear "I PUT DIESEL FUEL IN MY GASOLINE ENGINE AND SOMETHING IS WRONG!"

Here's your answer. You are hurting your engine and fuel economy by using a lower than recommended fuel octane: http://engineguy.wordpress.com/2007/...gh-octane-gas/

Ok I read that, but I see some people posting that they put 87 in there GL and its fine, my lease is 24 months, I really dont care about engine usage, I care more about gas mileage.

Do people see much difference on a 87 gas after 1k of course in a GL450 ?

I can not tell about GL, but I'm leasing 4th E-class already and I put 93 only first 1000 miles. After that 87 only. Never had any problems.

Does your gas mileage go down due to lower quality gas ? What is that enginee rated for minimum in E-Class ?

E lowest I think is 91. Never had a chance to measure gas mileage difference.

Hmm, really feel bad putting 87 in this car, but then again really feel bad paying $100 per tank...

Read my post more carefully. How hard is that?

I just said that if you put a lower reccommended octane fuel rating in your vehicle, then you WILL lose mpg, performance, and may (MAY) damage your engine.

And if you're complaining about spending 100 bucks per fill up with premium at the gas station everytime you're filling up a Mercedes GL, then don't drive it if you can't afford it.

WoW very big egos on this forum, but I guess that should be expected. Its not about affording it, its about burning money (in a full sense of the saying). Again its a leased car and if I dont have to put 91 or 93 better for me to save some money. Affording it and being smart about your spending is 2 different things...

Just to add to it, I`ll be happy to pay $100 for the 93 if I know this will save gas.... but if it doesnt then whats the point on a leased car ?

Simply put, don't put 87 octane on the GL ever. Minimum allowed is 91 octane but 93 octane is preferred.

That's just how it is. You WILL notice a decrease in overall drivability, performance and mpg if you put anything lower than 87 octane. You want to save some money on your lease? Fine. Go 91 octane. But if you really don't care about how the vehicle will perform everyday, just want to save money and just want to beat up the lease, then put whatever you want in the fuel tank.

I don't wanna start the war. Everybody has their own opinion, but I know many people who lease GL/E classes and they put 87 with no problems at all.
Fortunately for me - there is no " 87 diesel " thing, so I have no choice, but my E class never sees 93 in NYC. I only put it when I'm in NJ, where it's about 40 cents cheaper.
