Upgrade GL 2012 Comand to 2013
I wonder if it will be possible to upgrade the 2012 crapy comand headunit to the new 2013 version (I doubt it)
if not - are there any aftermarket systems that will work to replace the one in the 2012 GL?
I just took my first road trip that tested the navigation system's ability and I was greatly disappointed - Poor routing / out of date mapping / I really expected much better quality from a 95$ vehicle!!!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

You might be giving more credit to the 2013 version than it's due. ;-) I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'm presuming MB will remain consistent with Comand - be a generation or 2 behind what you have on your cellphone.

My other car is 2012 E-class, which has the same Command as 2013 GL and I wouldn't say it's much different, than my 2011 GL Command. The only big difference is control knob, which makes navigating easier.

Everyone should be aware that the factory COMAND system should NEVER be a prime reason for buying a Mercedes. In fact it is usually a negative factor.

Only 2 generations behind the cellphone? THAT's an understatement! If you want a NAV system that is up-to-date and is updatable then go to a car electronics dealer (such as CarToys) and check out their offerings. Kenwood, Panasonic, Pioneer and several others make replacement headunits that can replace the factory unit. Several also offer built in bluetooth, Sirius XM and other stuff that your factory unit may not have.

Anyone have any suggestions on replacement models - I'm kinda partial to Pioneer...

I heard something about being able to install apps on the new unit (2013) any truth to that rumor?

I'm looking forward to playing with that. It's not like you can pick stuff out of the app store and install. Mbrace2 has a service that provides access to the internet. They say they have internet browsing capability, google local search, facebook, yelp and a few other things. The service costs $14 per month. My initial reaction is it won't be worth $14 per month versus using my cellphone, but we'll see.

sounds like the actual unit isnt being improved - just aome additional features that probably will actually function as crapy as the rest of the unit LOL

We've been spending a lot of time convincing you not to do it, but I'm not sure it's possible anyway. The 2013 layout with the screen located higher in the dash, but then all the controls located below the screen seem to pose a large physical problem to retrofit into the 2012 cavity. Check out some pictures on MBUSA.com and you will see it's a much different footprint.

I actually decided a couple days ago to possibly replace it with an after-market unit.
-Anyone have any experience with this?
-Who all makes units that fit like the OEM but are actually user friendly with decent features and good navigation function?
-Should i start a new thread about it?
Thanks to everyone for you input...
