Towing a horse trailer

I've already searched thru all the forum post regarding towing but still have questions.

dry weight of my Royal T 3horse trailer is 1280kg or 2816lbs, How do I find out what my tongue weight is on this trailer??

my horses average 1000lbs, usually just haul 2 horses to approx trailer weight loaded is about 5000lbs. this is considerably lighter than the max weight of 7500 that factory says.

I use a 6" raised hitch/ball combo so that I'm at least level when loaded. I load the 2 horses in the first 2 stall of the trailer so one is ahead of the axle and the other is on the axle. If I tow one horse I put them in the middle stall over the axle. any comments on that???

My Gl350 raises when I attach the trailer and for the most part I don't have issues pulling. But I do notice a bit of shake or vibration, not exactly what to call the feel at mid speeds but then disappears. I do have a brake controller wired in and dialed in correctly, also the plug adaptor for use with the Led lights from the GL and the horse trailer.

If I were towing any trailer I wouldn't care quite as much but when your pulling live animals it ups the ante considerably. Part of the reason I traded away my Range Rover was because of the diesel/towing capacity of my GL.

What am I missing on this combo? What could be the issue with the shake? I do feel the trailer when I start to pull it obviously but on the highway it's minimal.

My husband hates my truck and is totally no help to me at all. He drives a dodge 1ton....

Tks in advance

In my opinion you can check tires on your trailer, balance if needed, I don't see any problem with the load / weight but a Weight Distribution hitch kit will help you a lot !

2008 GL320 CDI
I'm not sure I will be of much help but can share the following.

My wife uses our 2008 GL320 CDI for towing a Trailet extra tall two horse straight load with front dressing room. Our trailer is about 3k plus two horses 1 @ 1400lbs (warmblood) and the other 1200lbs. The weight of our trailer & horses seems comparable if not greater than yours. The trailer should have a manufacturer plate somewhere stating the weights and capacitity of the trailer including the tongue weight. In nearly two years of towing with this vehicle, she has never encountered a "shaking" other than when a horse starts dancing some. She previously has towed for more than 10 years and 50K miles with a GMC 3/4 ton and knows what it should and shouldn't feel like. FYI - she loves towing with the GL 320 CDI.

I agree with the other poster's ideas.

1. Use a weight distribution hitch.
2. Check the tire quality (broken belt?) and balance of the trailer tires.
3. Check the trailer wheel bearings.

GL 350
This link explains how you can measure the tongue weight:

http://www.etrailer.com/faq-how-to-d...ue-weight.aspx

It is usually recommended that you have 10% to 15% of the trailer weight on the tongue. This is required for stability and avoiding sway. Keep in mind that the max tongue weight for GL is 600#.

Best,

AMG E 43
Question 2019 GLS 450 towing horse trailer

I am looking at the 2019 GLS 450 to replace a 2006 Armada for pulling my 2 horse straight bumper pull trailer. I haul 1 horse on flat, paved roads, usually 20-60 miles round trip (no road warrior trailering city/freeway driving. Will this vehicle
safely pull it? Approx. total weight of loaded trailer is 4000#. I would be trading my 2017 AMG E 43 to downsize to one vehicle and want to make sure I'd be making a good, SAFE decision.

Melinda, you are posting in the older GL forum - ideally, you'd want to look into the X166 forum. However, assuming the newer GL's still have about the same rating as the older ones, you're roughly at half the tow rating at 4K lbs. I wouldn't even bat an eye at that weight. I'm sure you can find the trailering specs/ratings online or just ask your dealer to double check.
