New Key
What's my best source for a new GL320 key? Dealership quoted me:
Mr. Pierce,
Ordering a key for a Mercedes is a 2 step process. You will have to come to the dealership with your drivers license and proof of ownership (either a title or registration) and we can then order the key from Mercedes. It takes about two business days for us to get it and it will run you $228.00 plus tax. After it comes in, an appointment will have to be made for the vehicle to come into service and have the key synchronized. That takes about a half hour and there is an additional charge of $67.00 for that. We are having a service clinic during Oktoberfest so I don’t think they will be taking any appointments that day. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Does this sound about right?

Not an endorsement, and I've not used them - yet. Just another option.

That's what I'm thinking, another dealer never said anything about second trip to program just for pick up.

Neither key requires any actual programming with DAS/Xentry at a dealer. I have ordered regular and keyless go keys for 01 W220, 03 R230, 07 W164 (which also happens to be a GL320 same as the original poster of this thread).
My W164 has keyless go and I ordered a key. Came home and it worked perfectly. No programming of any kind.
I think some of the keys required you to put them in the ignition, turn to first position, then leave for some time (10 mins? 30 mins?) so the car recognized the key. Maybe that's what they are charging you $67 for
In any case, bring the key home and try it. If it doesn't work, put it in the ignition and turn it as far as it will go (engine won't start) and leave it there.
But I can confirm for an 07 GL320 with Keyless GO it works right out of the box.
Note that all they are doing is programming a VIN number into the key (along with some other technical details like key track # but I won't get into the gory details as it's irrelevant for this discussion).
The car looks for a proper key with the exact matching VIN number programmed into it. Then the DAS (drive authorization system) allows the engine to start.

That's cheap!
When I tried the used eBay deal they told me right up front if the key failed I'd still be liable for the tech fee and another 62 bucks again when I got one to work.
So I ordered one from a dealer in North Carolina off eBay saved the receipt and made my appointment which took another 2 weeks. The money i saved on the fob paid for the programming. I did have to show proof of ownership and provide a VIN at the time of ordering. The fob was brand new still in the plastic and unprogrammed and the key uncut. It came within a few days. I did have a bit of a hassle with the servicing dealer on cutting the key. "Since I did not buy it from them they were not obligated to cut it"! My dealer is not very friendly at all! JERK's come to mind. I'm usually pretty pliable until jerked around, then I hand it right back and more! Not recommended at all!
