I'm having severe wind noise in the cabin when exceeding 50mph on hwy & street. The dealer tells me it's the design of the front windshield and the side view mirrors and it's normal with the ML as well.. I would appreciate advice on how to handle the problem the noise is driving me nuts,

BS...Change your dealer! Mine's very quiet, as well as all the ones' I test drove... even at much higher speeds. Check to make sure there is nothing holding the rear door from sealing (pinched mat). Perhaps take a 'test' drive in one of the dealer's new/used, then ask why his is so much quieter...

I have a slight wind noise at speed, and it goes away when operating the ac/heat fan. Does it go away when you turn your fan on? There are several posts about this, fix has been replacing the felt tape around the heat box, which I fear might do more harm than good, so I live with it by turning the fan on/off.

Wonder if the seals around the doors are dried out. Common problem out here in the Southwest. I regularly treat the seals on our 2010 with Gummi-Pflege & have no noise issues. Wonder if you have an air leak around the windshield.

My 2011 is very quiet at all speeds.
Ask the dealer to test drive an ML or another GLK and see how "normal" it really is...

I had a lot of wind noise too. It turned out that the black urethane molding at the top edge of the windshield was loose. You couldn't tell when looking at it - on a stopped car. At speed it would lift up just a small amount along the edge. The air flow disruption created a lot of noise.
I was going crazy, before this discovery, looking for the source of the noise taping up gaps, moldings and edges all over the place.
See if the front or rear edge of that urethane molding lifts up a little along it's edge anywhere. The vacuum from air traveling over it at speed is enough to lift it - if you can lift it.

I use my BT at freeway speeds all the time with no issues, and we're talking L.A. freeways...

I agree, but no idea what else to do.
Well we share the same freeways then, which means we go slow . But once above 50ish mph, the noise gets really bad.

I rarely do rush hour so my typical fwy speeds are more like 70 - 80 mph.
Recently did a run down to Newport Beach sometimes cruising at 90, using my phone on BT much of the way with no problem.
As for what to do, take your service advisor for a ride and then tell him to fix it or give you a new car...

Thankfully mine is very quiet at 80 MPH. It was noticeably more quiet than my 2013 Ford Escape. The Escape was drastically more quiet than the 2010 Ford Focus I was driving. I would say the GLK is one of the most quiet vehicles that I have driven.

That was tongue in cheek, hence the smiley .
Tried that, and they replaced the upper strip to no avail. It's hard to argue when the two brand new loaners on the lot sounded exactly the same.
Again, maybe we all define "noisy" and "quiet" differently. The biggest gripe I have with the GLK is not the overall wind noise level, but that the noise tends to be not a monotonic "whoosh" sound, but more like a buffeting type "whoosh whoooooosh whoosh whoooooosh" noise, if that makes sense. The loaners had exactly the same buffeting.
I should add that the SA did mention the possibility that the racks are the noise sources, and offered to take them off. He said that would be a big job though (dropping headliner etc) and I would have to commit to leaving them off if that fixed it. I didn't want to have holes in my roof, so I declined.

If you have a whoosh whoooooosh whoosh whoooooosh noise and not a steady sound it probably has to do with the side windows or the air venting system. If you open the front window and don't crack the rear you get that type of noise in most cars do to the pressure buildup and then the release back out the same window when there is not an escape path for the pressure. Are you runnning the air in recirculation mode or letting the climate control determine that? Is the frequency slow (every second) or about the speed of a drummer in a normal rock band or very high like a buzz? I am not sure where the outlets for interior air are in the GLK but maybe something is covering them and generating a cyclic pressure build.

Yes, the side mirrors is still one area I want to tape up and try. As for the air vent, I completely taped off the entire air box in the engine compartment with no effect.
I know what you mean about the "cracked rear window buffeting", but that's not exactly what I have. My noise is more random, not at any given frequency. It's as if there are frequent cross wind gusts, that's exactly what it sounds like. But again, I can get 3 whooshes in a row, followed by a few seconds of nothing, then some more whooshes. If that makes sense.

As for the roof racks being the source of noise, we all have 'em so that doesn't sound right.
Interesting that you describe the noise as buffeting; I get that at speed if I have the sun roof open, but not when it is closed.
Now you have me really wondering...

This is exactly what I experienced in my wife's new-to-her 2011 GLK when I took it up over 80 for the first time the other day. I was wondering if it was air coming off the passenger side wiper and hitting the side mirror. Now I'm wondering if it's the heater box... annoying on a "new" car, but it is CPO and has a few months of original factory warranty as well.

Just goes to show that we all seem to be having different issues. I had the dealer replace my windshield top strip, and it made no difference. I also tried several layers of tape over all the windshield seals, and it made no difference.
