Two keys
I went to my local Mercedes dealer to find out if I could order another key and after checking I found I had 4 out of the 8 left so I ordered a key. I got it today and the total cost was $306.68 (I was expecting around $500). My first and only key wouldn't operate the door locks remotely so I thought it was dead. When I took it in I asked if the key had been programmed. I was assured it was because it started the engine. My tech checked the key anyway and found it was programmed but not initialized. After initializing the key, the FOB worked perfectly so now I have two operational keys which didn't cost me an arm and leg so I'm a happy camper now.

Glad it worked out for you.
Just FYI and future reference for readers, the ML163 key FOB has TWO parts:
1) The circuit board for keyless entry (remotely lock/unlock doors, liftgate, panic).
2) The RFID Immobilizer chip (so you can start it).
The key FOB arrives (to your home or pick up at Dealer) with the RFID already programmed to start the ML. The Keyless Entry part, however, needs to be programmed at a MB Dealer...or as you've mentioned, Initializing. Many ML owners are not aware of this and usually get these two things mixed up.
Also, the quoted price for a new key FOB usually includes the programming of the keyless entry.

On ebay you are buying the key shell with the blade which needs to be cut. The electronics you have to remove from your old keys & fit it into the new shell

The ones on Ebay are just replacement shells and I have heard those do not fit snug after transferring the RFID & electronics from old shell to new shell.

Howzit CGL?
I got one of these shells. Had to do "open heart surgery" to make the board fit. After that one needs a bit of glue to hold the shell together. Other than that it works..........

Yes I bought 2 shells off ebay and put my old keys in, not perfect fit and I did glue the part before he batteries also. Anyone have a diagram of exactly how the springs go in? Each key turned out different for me as far as spring action and neither like factory.
