C63 guy trying to help out dad with tire choices
Hey guys
My dad has a 2011 or 2012 ML550 4matic...time for some new tires. I told him to go with Michelin or Continental.
We live in CA...so rain performance is important, but no need for snow...and it's not seeing any off-road use obviously. Can you guys give feedback on which tires you are using and how you like them? Michelin has a LOT of SUV tires...what gives a good blend of performance and wear?
Thanks in advance for any advice....if it was a choice of high performance tires on a car, I'd be able to help him out.

2009 ML320 Bluetec
I put "CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology" in stock size 255/50-19 on my ML320 600 miles ago. Quieter than my worn Michelins, but then again new tires usually are quieter than worn. Am pleased so far and at $210 at TireRack they are a bargain.

I went with these and love them. Much, much better than the OEM Continentals.

I have my third set of tires at 45k and have installed a set of H-rated 4 season tires. My previous tires had very short lifetimes (OEMs lasted 15K and the replacement Continental DWS failed after 23K).
Continental refunded me a significant fraction of purchase price of DWS as credit on another set of Contis - so I went that way vs. Michelin.
Like NWHHE, I went with the "CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology". I'd had some insight that the higher speed rating tires gain those ratings through softer rubber - with resultant short lifetimes on heavy vehicles. (BTW, the DWS tires on the W211 are doing great.) Besides, I figured out that my W164 was really never going to take advantage of the V rated tires for my typical driving.
After they were installed, I literally gained about 2 mpg (out of 20)! New tires are always quieter than the old ones, so I'm not going to comment. I'm at about 7 K, just had them rotated and they couldn't measure any wear. Performance was decent in the (endless!) snow this year. (I chose to go with four seasons vs snow/ice in the winter.) It'll be interesting to see how they fare in that category as the tread wears. So far, I'm happy with the choice.

Michelin Latitudes - best tire but expensive. LX20 ? I stumbled on this video while searching for balancing info. 25 lbs is the roadforce limit on passenger cars.

the quietest tires for my ML350 are the Dunlop Grandtrek and they do very well in dry and wet. and they are cheap. I am on my second set. First one lasted 40K.
Too bad they are not available for the C63.
