I have this strange transmission noise, help!

Yes.. Iīve got an 2006 ML350
And yes i have read about the pinionbearings getting bad.

But my noice isnīt constant.
Itīs like a 'chirping' sound, one per revolutions of the wheels.
With that said it also increases with speed, not louder but more often.
Letting the engine retard the speed it gets silent.
No difference turning hard in either left or right directions(to sort out wheelbearings)

I have the latest days changed the chain in transferbox as i found a rattlenoise when wiggeling around on front propshaft.
Today i checked oillevel in front differential, it was missing about 4-5dl(half a quarter)
Filled it up(no change), no difference at all in sound.

I figure if it would be a pinionbearing it would be a constant noise.
Not a 'chirping' noise as iīve got.

Help.

Rgds

Sounds like you might have to join the Front Differential Failure Club.
That is what I had heard before I had my front differential replaced .
Nothing what plenty of money can not fix .

I was lucky that I still had a couple of month on my extended warranty left .
The otherwise substantial expensive front differential replacement did not cost me anything.

Only passengerside bearing was worn out.
But iīm replacing both, pinionbearings seems ok, i really donīt want to take that apart.
But there are no strange noise from bearings when turning on the pinion only.
Did a really really long clening with degreaser and water, and did it 4 times.
Used highpressurewasher to blow the pinionbearings clean.
Dryed it with compressed air and soaked the pinionbearnings in new GL5 oil.
And,, yes.. there are only normal sound from bearings that are in 'tension'.

the blue is just a spraygrease i sprayed directly after heatwash.

new bearings are in, on itīs way to be sealed

i sprayed a thin satin black layer to add corrosionresistance.
At this point: ready to put back in car.
and,,, result?
Noise gone! =)

Filled with 1.5litre of 75w90 fully synthetic kendall oil.
