Thermostat electrical connector

I have a 2008 ML 550 that I recently changed the thermostat on. the thermostat housing has a two-wire electrical connector on it. My question is what is it for?
I don't believe it is a coolant temp sensor as the coolant temp sensor is in the back of the engine.

My best guess is a thermostat valve position sensor or some kind of flow sensor.

Your three disc thermostat reports to the ECU the coolant temp. It has three positions 40-65-100C therefore it does both--- at the appropriate temp it opens and a flow results---bla bla

Now that wasn't so hard. Thanks. You'll be getting a postcard from Plains.
