Power Steering Pump- FAIL
With only 68,000kms (approx 42,000 Miles) , my steering pump has given up!
It started with a few little noises for a few days, which were a slight squeaking noise, in tune with the main belts revolutions.
These were minor, and i put it down to either water on the belt, or one of the pulleys were on their way out.
Well, after about 100km of driving, that squeaking noise was replaced with some awful noises, whenever i turned the steering wheel. VERY VERY LOUD!
Anyway, parked the car, and there it was, power steering oil, STREAMING out from under the car.
Took the tray off underneath, and can see, the oil is pissing out of the steering pump.
Mercedes AU trade price on Steering Pump----- WAIT FOR IT------ $2250!
Ordered it from the US for $450 LANDED!
Just waiting for it to come in, and whack it in, and hopefully problem fixed!!
Thought i would let you all know

Sounds like a similar issue I had about 3 months ago, noise when turning corners ect, however it ended up being the power steer reservoir being blocked (has a filter inside). I think I got to it before the system let go. The blocked filter wasn't allowing p/s oil to head back out to the pump, putting strain on it.
You should order a new reservoir as well. They are cheap overseas, not sure about here.
I also paid $450 for my pump but as it wasn't needed, ended up selling it for $900 to a mechanic in Sydney, so win win all around.

That filter problem you speak of, was only an issue on the pre update ML's as far as I cold find on the net.
From Sep 2008 they had fixed that problem.
But was still handy to know, and I actually ordered a filter/ reservoir anyway as it was only $30 Genuine. Didn't end up using it though, as the pump had come in, before the reservoir, and I was eager to have the car back on the road.
Tanks for advice.

2011, so could be an issue in any of those cars.
The shop that actually diagnosed and fixed the problem have a detailed
article on their website about W163 ML filter blockages.
5 months on and still no power steering issues

Bringing up an older thread because I just noticed a significant increase in power steering moan today when driving. My ML63 has about 74K miles. Has been fine and hasn't had any issues or symptoms before this.
Wondering if this would be from this filter issue you're describing so looking for some tips on DIY repair. Could I just clean the filter if that looks to be plugged or is it built-in to the reservoir as a unit?
PS: tried the link to the reservoir part but haven't been successful. Do you have part # for it? Thanks

I priced up Power steering pumps everywhere and went to MB parts uk, £207 exchange, thats over £100 cheaper than any recon anywhere.
It looks new in a new box.
