If they go by the calendar, it should be 2017. Guess we will see spy shots next later this year, or early next for the July/August deliveries.
Something I thought about is how they could face-lift it even for 2017. They're releasing the S Class cab, and just released the 2016 Maybach S600 with "current" "face".
A face-lifted W222 means anyone who bought the 2016 will have the "old" "dated" face.
May have shot themselves in the foot with this. We'll see.

If memory serves; the 220s went on sale very early in 2000, like January/February maybe, the 221s were on dealer lots in March of 2006, but we all had to endure waiting until October/November for our 222s to arrive. That's essentially a 6-8 month difference in the amount of time the pre-facelifts will be on sale here in the US, so adding 6-8 months on the backend before the facelift shows up seems logical to me.
On another note, I'm really glad to have found this forum recently, really a great place to share and learn valuable info...
This is my original post on another forum when I took delivery of my 2014 S550 back in November 2013, hope I can post the link here...

I hope it either comes in a hard top or 4 door. Not that neither has happening. I want to test drive it, and see if its worth the purchase. There have already been spy shots of it.

A thinly camouflaged prototype of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet has been spied undergoing testing in Sindelfingen, Germany.
According to the latest gossip , the open-top S-Class will receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September so it shouldn't come as a surprise this near-production prototype had only a bit of disguise on it. The front end was completely exposed and only the rear half of the car carried some thin plastic camo while the rear end was hiding the taillights which appear to have a lot in common with those of the S-Class Coupe upon which the Cabriolet will be based.

The W221 was produced about 9 months longer than earlier S-class models or sedan other sedan models usually. W222 sales started only mid 2013 in Europe, I guess almost the same time as US sales started. Usually new models are release later in the US (about half a year?).
Calculating from the European sales start, one could guess the W222 facelift appear some time mid 2017 (that should be MY 2018 in the US).

W221 sales started 09/2005 in Europe, facelift would likely follow the European production time (facelift is release to the US at the same time as in Europe).

From a post on another site... Does anyone read German?
Looks like dual info screens will be merged into one; and steering wheel controls will add a scroll wheel...
Also think facelift gets some sort of configurable instrument screens, DRL leds switch from segmented lights to more modern continuous bands, along with usual sharpened up front/rear fascia...

Since the steering wheel is already available in Europe on any S-Class with Sport package I don't see anything interesting.

Single Display and an updated steering wheel. They mention a scroll wheel on the left side button area but I can't make that out. Both as you stated but nothing else worthwhile.

This wheel is all together different. It is a 3 spoke wheel, but it is not the sport wheel. This does not exist today anywhere in the MB lineup.

In typical European fashion, steering wheels are leather only unless you pay for the wood/leather version.

This photo is from a magazine but can also be found in this thread:

The new steering wheel looks like the new three spoke, non-sport wheel on the newly updated models like on the GLE, CLA, B, etc. It looks really bad without the flat bottom like the one on the s coupe or the aforementioned vehicles with the interior sports package.

As it stands, 2017 S class will be as ours is now. No update.
MB Manhattan believes 2018 will be the update year.
Anyone have any info? Anything at all?

I am surprised that the 9 speed is not already in the MY16 models and expect it to make it into the US before MY17.

I wonder when the change will happen here? Really odd that the S550 didn't get the 9G for 2016. The S550 Cabrio gets it of course, but it goes on sale next summer.

it's probably too fuel efficient with the 9G for the states........until someone figures out how to lower the expected gas mileage, it might be a while
don't want things to run too efficiently here LOL, bad for the bottom line

The e-class also has dual screens (under a single glass. That's actually an option btw, there is also a manual cluster/ nav screen combo option)
