Facelifted S Class for 2018 Spied

Facelifted S Class for 2018 Spied
I was browsing online during my lunch break today and I stumbled upon an article that shows spy pictures of a partially canvased face-lifted W222.
Of course there aren't any major changes to the body and it's styling due to the fact that this is a mid generation refresh. However the headlights appear to be smaller,
the chrome grill in this picture is the same one the S600 and AMG variants use (not the same as the current grill used on the S550s).
The front bumper is canvased off, my prediction is that this new S class will adopt the same shape used on the current E class elegance & avantgarde lines.
Judging from the fact that the car in the picture is fitted with 18" avantgarde wheels and chrome trim is being used on the rear bumper as well as below the doors,
the S class shown in the article is most likely neither the sport-styling variant or AMG model.
My thoughts and opinions:
I don't have much to say about this facelift yet because I need to see the sport line and AMG models, my only wish is that the sport line doesn't adopt a central star grill.
It looks great on the C class and E class, but please not the S.

I know I'm stating the obvious here but you'd definitely get a sweet launch with less wheel spin. All 738 lb-ft of torque with a 4matic...just thinking about it gives me the chills.

I think that the W222 is perfectly fine the way it is now. No facelift needed. It has such a bold legacy and unbeatable reputation that I honestly think MB could get away with not doing a mid-generation refresh.

There is the standard, sport package, AMG low-end (63) and high-end trim (65).
There will never be a large center star on a S-Class grill besides the tacky aftermarket ones.
There are also two headlight versions sold. Same as on todays W222, there will be updated designs.
Today, the US only features the high-end headlight (LED intelligent Light System) while outside the US, there is also the base version (LED high-performance).
The facelift version will feature the matrix LED as it's high end version (shown in the posted pics).
Overall, this appears to be a very minor facelift in the exterior, but loosing the big V8's is the bigger change...

Dealer suggests that it's what's inside that will change the most. According to GM (take with grain of ....) all of the 2017 e tech + more will arrive in next year's S. Subtle front and rear outside but the inside will bring the S's dated tech to where it needs to be in 2017/18.

He means that if you cannot afford a brand-new one wait for the AMG lead balloon to depreciate in value quickly and then pick up a used one in a few years after it's release

If I get that poor that I would have to wait 5 years for it to become affordable I can always sell the 575 SA and buy 2 of them (Coupe and Sedan)

Non US high end (basically high beams all the time with some fancy software that makes it not blind oncoming cars)
US headlights - low n high beam
Non US low end
I've been thinking of finding the high end version but am guessing it won't work

There's 3 global headlights, right?

They are dumbed down to meet US DOT standards

Well, the current larger V8 engines in the S550 and S63 are going the way of the dodo.
In the 550, it is being replaced by the smaller 4L M176 engine and the 63 gets the M177 engine, same as the new E63 (W213).
Both are paired with 9G-Tronic...
Overall I'm sure that the performance will be the same/better on fuel consumption but i always liked the larger V8's

[QUOTE=jenz;6836322]I don't really see the changes
if you look closely at the first spy picture that cryomancer posted you'll note well that the headlamp exhibits three thin eyebrows in separate lighting strips. too many were complaining that the s looked like the c and had a hard time telling them apart. which hacked off the $100,000 s class buyer because they were being confused with the $40,000 c class buyer. (and now the new e benzo looks the same as the s and c.) so benzo gave one headlamp light strip for the c; 2 to the e; and 3 to the s. as such, anyone seeing a benzo coming towards them or if you view one coming up on you in the rear view mirror, you should be able to identifiy it straight away as to which flavour or german sausage you're about to enjoy.

Offically no, but you are correct. The US headlights are practically the high-end LED intelligent lights (same housing and design), but the "intelligence" has been removed. They are still calling them that, as can be seen on the headlight and in marketing materials.
They are dumbed down to meet US DOT standards

Maybe will just change out for the newer 3 strip headlights and be done with tweaking her, especially since they look like the newer, more seamless LED strip tech vs the older, big block diodes

It's like, based on the exterior images, you wouldn't change the winning team each match day
However, I would like to see what interior looks like because it may look outdated
