R63 AMG- AIRMATIC- loud hissing when parked

I just got a new to me r63 AMG with 110k miles. The suspension seems to work correctly, all sides are even in height when parked and running. It goes up and down correctly in the different height modes. The sport and comfort are notably different in ride. All seems in order.

When I turn off the car about 10 second later there is a notably loud "TSSsssssSSSSTTT" sound from the front of the car. I don't hear any leaks from the air springs. The car lowers as I understand it is supposed to all around. My concern is how loud the noise is. My friend's ML with airmatic makes more of a quiet "pppffft" once it is parked for 10 seconds.

Any thoughts? Should I be concerned?

Oh, and yes, the car is totally badazz...for a minivan

Thanks,
Justin Wade

I've had a few cars with aftermarket air susp systems on in the past, so I was used to having them venting even louder than the R63 does... I've also had muffled systems where you could barely hear any whooshing noise at all. I toyed with the idea of putting an air muffler on the airmatic valve manifold exhaust port, but have actually come to like the sound after my 2.5yo son started imitating the psssst it makes (he's really getting interested in all the mechanical workings of our cars). I was going to start mucking around some more with the R's suspension soon, so I can see how the manifold is set up, and what amount of work it'd take to muffle the exhaust. I think that really is the only way to dampen the release sound if you find it a bit too loud...

BTW, did you pick up the silver R63 that was for sale over in NJ or somewhere around there? I was thinking of grabbing that one to start the "hoarding" process, but my wife put a stop to that...!

from what I've seen the 06 & 7's don't have a "filter" on the air outlet port where some of the newer models do, so the newer ones seem to vent a bit more muffled. the filter is just a piece of foam on the nipple but it does diffuse the air sound a bit. all of them do have a filter on the air inlet port though, and the filter used there is very much like an in line gas filter, it's also routed up higher into the fender with a hose so there is no chance of sucking any kind of water into the system but the outlet doesn't share this concern so it is right at the valve assy. it's possible to extend the outlet and put more a filter on that too to muffle the outlet too I guess

Sounds like everything is normal and the earlier cars are just louder. It is remarkably like the air brakes on a semi.

Yes, I did get the car in NJ. It would appear to be the only one in Pewter Metallic in the USA. Not the best color....but the right price

I'd love to hear about your suspension work that you would do. I'm thinking of changing over to Bilstein's replacements when mine die.

I have nothing to add, but if you don't mind my asking, what did you pick it up for?

They are hard to find. And I'm hoping to pick one up next year at some point. Just wondering where the price point is. And where did you find it listed for sale?

There were a few for sale while I was searching. Had one for $12,800 with 85k on odometer but wasn't able to get to dealership in time and it was sold. It looked good in the pictures but you never really know the condition until you are standing next to it.

Excuse my language but holy crap!! That's half of what I've seen them for (the 3 or 4 I've seen).

Where did you see that one listed?

For that price, I don't mind a bit of a project! Yeesh!

It really depends on where you are... Markets are all over the place..

Believe it or not... areas like the East and West coast are the least expensive market for second hand premium brand cars.. Why?? Simple supply and demand.. There are more Mercedes, BMW, and Audi drivers out there vs say... North East Ohio....

Tell us the general market you are in... I can search some prospects for ya... I navigate the sites often....

I've been watching for an R63 for 3 years now. Besides mine the least expensive I found was 28K. I had the valve covers off and the cams were worn so I passed. There are about 4-6 for sale per year. The KBB book values are WAAAAY lower than what they actually sell for. Figure 25-30K for one with 75-100K miles.

Good luck searching,
Justin

Weird... I typed a reply and I guess never hit submit lol

I am in the NYC area (Pennsylvania, but 1 hr away, and am there often)

but shipping isn't a concern at all for the right car.

But, I've come to terms with most likely having to settle for an r500 😄

I saw one sell for around 25k last year near me (Poughkeepsie, a black one if I recall).

I won't be ready to bit the bullet until spring time.... Currently gutting and renovating a house we just bought... Not a dime to spare at the moment.

But it fits the bill of everything I want... Just really not seeing a single one for sale in a year is a bit disheartening.

I bought mine out of Ohio. I know of 3 others still in that state.

12k for one hard to believe IMO.

Heck we bought our 2006, one owner, with only 72k for 16K... years ago...

But that too, was a R350... The R63 is a different beast all together.

Now, Girly_tt, something to consider is that if you want a V8 for towing, you will have a much longer and limited search since they only made them for 2006 and 2007 for the US market (and others I believe). For 2008 they dropped the V8.

They are still out there, though...

Here is a private party 2006 R500 with only 57K on it for 12,995 from Florida.

Now this one looks real interesting.... a 2007 R500 WITHOUT air ride suspension. 72.8k on the clock... but it is a single owner/dealer maintained vehicle from Maryland. If in the market.... I would seriously look at this one...

If you want newer, and a V8, but want the long wheel base... the GL may be what you need....

Sorry to go so off topic....

Here are some pictures and a screen shot of the text messages where I had the salesman down to a $12,800 sale price.

I couldn't leave the job I was doing to go up there, had to be done and I don't want to upset this builder. Hardwood floor install had to be finished so cleaning crew could come in next day for settlement the following day. Some things just weren't meant to be. If it was closer then yeah but it was more than 2 hours away and just couldn't make time.

While I'm screwing up my own thread, that isn't an R63, its an R350. There are 108 R63's in the US and I've never seen one aside from my own in person, ever. Usually there are 4-6 for sale per year. There are 10's of thousands of R350's in the USA, I see several R350's every day. There are 100+ for sale at any one time. Totally different cars for very different prices.

Regards,
Justin

I'm glad you caught that! I'm on my phone. Couldn't get the pictures to load full size!

I've seen 2 in person, and only 1 for sale since I've been looking.

Sorry for screwing up your thread!
