2000 s500 need help!!!

I have an 2000 s500 and am having a confusing problem.

When I start the car it will idle fine, but as soon as I rev it (lets say I am keeping the rpm at 2000) in a few seconds my engine light will flash a few times and then will suddenly start idling ruff after the light has flashed a few time. when I let go of the throttle it will keep idling ruff until I turn it off.
When I start it up again it will be fine (tho the engine light will be on), but will do the same as soon as I give it gas.

At first thought I had a bad coil, but now I am not so sure..
I am not sure if it is safe to drive it that way to bring it to a garage?
If this is a quick fix I would rather do it my self.

Does anyone know what the problem would be?

Thanks

Could be a variety of different problems and without the codes it is hard to tell. As VMY says, if you are in the USA take it to one of the local autoparts stores they will check to codes for free.

I am in Canada and nothing is free here, just the snow...
I thought it might of been a bad coil. The vibration would be the cylinder miss firing.
It all started to happen on our last storm that we got. I had the car out of the garage and because of the strong winds, lots of snow built up in the engine bay.

I made sure to dry up the car and see if it would still do it and it does.
With its weird pattern (starting up fine until I give it gas ) I find it hard to pin point what it could be?

+1

I purchased an OBDII reader off one of the eCommerce sites for around $20 and the Torque program for an android device for $5 and it is the best $25 I've spent.

Turns out to be a bad injector.
I added some lucas oil injector cleaner and drove it a little and engine light turned off.
I changed all the spark plugs and wires as well as they were over due.

Car works great!

I got them on ebay for 194$

Though it was an injector issue, I am some glade I ordered them anyways.
at 160k they were in bad shape.
