Power Steering Damaged?

Hi Guys,

I got stuck in the sand the other day and while trying to maneuver out my steering got heavier and heavier. Eventually a tow truck got me out. But the power steering was almost dead.

I disconnected the battery and its fine again but within 10 minutes of driving the steering gets impossible to turn and its groaning super loud.

The only quick fix is to disconnect the battery and then it drives again for a peroid of time and gradually gets worse and worse until its dead.

I checked the P/S fluid and it was full.

What could be the issue? Sand stuck somewhere?

Thanks

This is it: Found it on youtube:

Have you checked belt condition and tension?

Thanks,

I checked the belt condition and it was on fine.

What should I be looking for in terms of tension?

The groaning is an indication of a bad pump. How many miles do you have on the car? Have you checked for play in the pulley? I just finished replacing mine because of the noise.

If it's fine after you disconnect the battery it's Not a mechanical problem with the pump

Do all the resets

I'd probably check the connector for the speed sensitive steering.

No experience on the MB, but I used to have a Subaru and ruined the steering pump two separate times trying to get unstuck from snow. High revs + sawing back and forth for some reason cooked the pump. Although they made a much louder squealing noise when they were going bad.
