You need a code scanner to plug in under your dash

Some auto parts stores lend them out free

You've had a coolant leak for a while. If you don't know how to check, I suspect that you're low on coolant, message or no message...all that crust around the reservoir took a while to build up...and it all came from leaking coolant.

What was the engine temperature when your check engine light came on?

Before you try driving the car at all, let alone fast, you should ensure that its vital fluids (oil, coolant, etc.) are at the proper level. Otherwise, you will damage the engine.

From your picture, I would suspect that you're low on coolant. That means that the engine is overheating. The check engine light is likely on because it's overheating.

In general, the check engine light means just that - check the engine! Since you're not certain how, I recommend you get this to a shop while it's a cheap fix...because if it's overheating, you're going to be looking at a very expensive fix soon...engines aren't cheap....

slow down. You seem very focused on the overheating, which the OP has not even described as a symptom. Being mildly low on coolant is not going to result in this drastic overheating you speak of.

Check engine lights don't come on from overheating unless it has the car to run so improperly that the emissions are affected.

OP...relax, read the codes, and then go from there.
