Just purchased this vehicle 36,000 miles - drove fine from Houston to Dallas.
Then drove about 20 miles this past saturday morning - no problems - great car.
Sunday morning strange things began to happen - it would not shift out of first gear and warning displays showed up:
-Pre-Safe unavailable
see ops manual
-Malfunction ESP
visit workshop
-Malfuntion ABS
visit workshop

i would love to visit workshop but the car won't shift outof first gear.
may have to bring in the towing service .

Any help appreciated

First and cheapest trick.... start the car, in park and at idle, turn the wheel lock to lock a couple times. Turn off car 30 sec, restart and see if trouble lights are out. This resets the steering angle sensor, an integral part of the ESP ABS systems. Not certain if it is also part of the presafe but I think it is.

In addition to wha Fxdeebee stated I would also turn the car on just before starting. Hold the gas pedal down for about 10-15 seconds. While still holding the gas pedal down turn the car off. Release the gas pedal and start the car normally.

Tried both of the above suggestions - no luck. Anyone got anything else to suggest. Thanks.

Is there an engine warning on the dash?

You could ue a cheap OBDII reader to find the fault codes.

Could it be a water problem or a leaking connector in the transmission? Check the passenger side floor under the carpet and see if it is wet. Also look on the blog for leaking transmission connector. If it does leak it will wick up the harness and get into the computer and cause all sorts of problems.

The car is local to me, went and hooked it up to STAR. Long story short.. new battery in last several weeks. Reset a couple dozen codes from that. What was left was ETC ( Electronic Trans Control ) is not well. Cannot establish communication with it at all. Fuse 37 good. As Iganski noted, I suspect also that its the "leaky trans connector with ATF wicking up the harness to the ETC" problem given its ultra low mileage ( little use, O-rings probably shrunk/cracked ) and relatively high calendar age.

I would remove and carefully open the TCM, checking for ATF, and for a loose or missing electronic component. When we opened a friend's TCM, we found a transistor floating loose inside the case, and a lot of ATF.

Washing the board repeatedly with brake cleaner, followed by soldering the transistor back into place, restored normal operation. We have bought new transmission connectors for both our cars, and plan to change the fluid and install the connectors some day soon.

tsdironman, how did you make out with your problem? Did you get it fixed? What was it? Please share with the group.

Not so satisfactory trip to indie....

VEHICLE IS IN LIMP MODE. CK AND ADVISE. CUST JUST BOUGHT VEHICLE AND WAS DRIVING
AND DROVE OK. NEXT DAY DROVE IT WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR.

CK AND ADVISE.

PULLED AND CLEARED FAULT CODES AND CHECKED ACTUAL VALUES AND FOUND NO

COMMUNICATION WITH THE TCM. FAULTS IN THE COMPUTER ARE CHECK POWER SUPPLY AT

CONTROL UNIT Y3/8N4 (FULLY INTEGRATED TRANSMISSION CONTROL (VGS) CONTROL UNIT.

NEED TO PERFORM FURTHER TESTING ON THE COMMUNICATION ISSUE. CHECKED FUSES,

POWER AND GROUND AT THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE AND ALL THESE ARE OK.

WILL NEED TO REPLACE VALVE BODY AND CODE TO CAR. POWER IS OK TO MODULE/VALVE

BODY BUT INTERNALLY SHORTED. THIS PART IS A DEALER ONLY PART. CUSTOMER MUST

TAKE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. CUSTOMER ADVISED.
