Lots of questions first:
What year is the car?
How much service history is there?
What evidence have you got of any work that has already been done?
What is "the controller"? Is it the ignition power supply in the middle of the V at the front?
When were the plugs last replaced?
What are the part numbers of the left and right coil packs?
Plugs are cheaper than coils, so maybe change the plugs first?
Its not an uncommon problem unfortunately.

cyl 7,8,9 are also controlled by one solenoid for de-activation, and 10, 11, 12 by another solenoid. The harness connections are on the left bank top of the valve cover.
Complex stuff, but if you want to change the plugs, you first have to remove the O2 sensor connector heat shield BELOW the coil pack, and then remove the coil pack (be VERY careful with torking these bolts, as the go into the aluminium heads)
Then you get to the plugs, but remove and inspect each and everyone of the red silicone rubber plug inserts in the metal tubes (MB says replacement mandatory at each removal. If there are any arching tracks, the coil pack is probably in trouble.
You can search on our forums (hoaz129) for more details on coil packs.
good luck!
