02 S600 Problems

I work at a large yard and we recently got an 02 S600 that wouldn't start.
It will be crushed if I don't buy it, so I want to see if I can get it running..

The story:
128k miles, black on black.
Hooked up a battery and it cranks..
Sprayed some starting fluid into the intake and it sputters for a split second and then goes back to just cranking..

Fuel pump comes to mind, but I don't want to throw parts at it. Want to narrow it down before buying stuff.
I already checked both fuse boxes under the hood, fuses look good.
I understand that these cars can be a nightmare to diagnose, so I'll try my best to relay any information that is asked for.

Thanks in advance for the support

these cars are not for the faint of heart. (I have that car )
A check of codes would be a good idea (since the battery had been disconnected), but you need a good understanding of this complex machine, but you need a DAS MB diagnostic on it, not your regular OBDII.

good luck!

We have an expensive snap on scanner that was able to connect to every system except the ecu..
I'm stumped.

Like Kraut said - Mercedes is an entirely different animal. They don't play well with other (scanners). You need a Star/Das to perform the proper diagnostics.

Buy the car and part it out. I'm interested in some 600 interior bits!

Parting it out isn't an option. I have 4 other cars, so there's no space
Any idea were I can start? I don't have access to the Star system for diagnosis, I can try to use the snap-on scanner we have. I'll be heading in to work in a few minutes and I'll be there for the day.

Could failed or failing coils cause it to not fire?

Definitely don't let it go to the crusher !! Could be simple as a crank sensor , or fuel pump . Iv rarely seen both coils fail 100% so doubt it . Maybe the voltage transformer in the middle of the engine needs to be looked at ( supplies coil packs with power) . Basicly you need to check for fuel and spark . If you have that it should start and run ! Also make sure it's not the anti theft or bad key issues causing no start

There has to be a spark because it sputters as if it's about to start when I spray starting fluid. The key is brand new, ordered it from Mercedes.

Mercedes
Disconnect the fuel line near the engine and stick it in a glass jar or other container while someone cranks, so you can see if fuel is being pumped and actually making it to the engine

There's a fuel pressure test port at the front of the fuel rail?

Disconnected the fuel line at the rail, fuel is being delivered. Rules pump out of the equation. I find it hard to believe that it's a spark issue. If it starts for a split second with starting fluid, why not with gas????

Would a weak battery cause starting issues?
I tried to crank it earlier today with 3 jump boxes attached and the battery (which is low), and I would get labored cranking along with flashing dash lights...

My only thought is, if it sputtered the other day with the jump boxes attached and starting fluid why wouldn't it stay on??? Would a low battery really cause it to stall even after it began to start???

I really want to save this car from the crusher, but I cant afford to purchase another not running car. If I can get it started, I'll get it in a heart beat.
Too many projects right now

Do not jump this vehicle ! Specially with 3 jumpers attached lol these cars have very sensitive electronics !! My advice is at least put a decent battery in there to start with . If you purchase the vehicle and even sell it as is you will still make something

I've heard mixed thoughts about using jump boxes on these type of vehicles. I can see the logic in it, just not convenient to swap out batteries at a yard that gets hundreds of cars a week and almost all have dead batteries. I'll try to charge up a few monday, and see how the car reacts to that.

In the mean time, If I get a good battery and it still cranks with no start, any ideas on where to look next?

Thanks for the help guys

Crank position sensor ($15 on eBay )

There's no use putting in a junkyard battery . W220 Mercedes requires a very strong battery to start it. Put in a strong one from one of your own cars or get a new one . You are just wasting time playing with weak batteries

I often used to get a flat battery on my car, and I got jump starts from other cars at work. Once I got started off a petrol Mini. The battery on that was tiny. I don't think its such a big deal.

Had you considered whether someone had put diesel into the tank?

There is a reason that the car is in the yard - it might not be as simple as a dead battery, even though that is now a real problem...

No.

After CPS, there`s always a possibility of the ECU, but you must be able to read it (DAS).

Could be almost anything; cam sensors etc.

I doubt you have an engine problem

Its much more likely an electronics /sensor problem

Put a decent battery in, car cracked normally, still no start, not even a sputter anymore.. Tried starting fluid again, had a back fire with no start or sputter.. Just cranks and cranks and cranks, no obvious difference in cranking sounds.

I may just order the CPS and see how that goes, found them for $13 new oem quality (supposedly).. Would a faulty MAF sensor cause a no start?

How often do the coils and transformer go?

Thanks guys.

Get a cps from the dealer, dont waste time with the cheap ones, theyre cheap for a reason. Dealer cps is $50.

Coils you can get at most auto parts stores, transformer im not sure. Looks like ur gonna end up buying this car with all the parts youre buying!

ignition xfmr is dual channel, coil packs are too.

The ECU, if fried, can only be replaced by dealer, as it is a "write once only" component married to the car. You need a DAS interrogation.

Forget your Snap-on, I believe it does not have the full multiplexer required, but anybody with a lap top and DAS can do it.

good luck!
