Most people just superglue the two halves together.

I'm not sure sure a part failing after 13+ years is "planned obsolescence".

Don’t you think this and numerous other components of Mercedes cars of this era and going forward to the present day could have been designed in a more robust way?

Thousands of postings reporting problems on the various Mercedes Forums is evidence of "designed to fail". This part was expected to fail much sooner. I guess, I didn’t open my trunk per statistical averages.

Your suggestion to use "super glue" as a fix, is more appropriate to another German brand - TRABANT - http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Trabant
