Front Bumper Facelift Questions - going from 2008 bumper to 2011 - parts list?

I have a 2008 S550 4Matic and I want to upgrade the front bumper to the new facelift style. I have already purchased the following oem front bumper from ebay - it was from a 2011 S550 AMG:

I already found the LED Drls and the covers on eBay. I wanted to find out what other parts I would need. I also need the center cover for the bumper also - I havent been able to find that. Does anyone know the other parts I would need? I have seen something about energy absorber and wheel wells.

Also the other question is how would I wire the LED DRLs? Is there a wiring kit I can buy? I dont want to wire them to the fog light bulbs - I would rather wire them to the battery instead.

I do not blame you for wanting to change the front, change the mirrors and the tail lamps if you can afford it. The 07-10 are really not very pretty. Now what you are undertaking is a very daunting task. You will need grills, and possibly a new hood (not sure though and possibly, the headlamps might have to be changed out as well). The CL was the one that was the most extensively changed due to the removing of the pontoon fenders and the headlamps and hood and bumper. The noise on the hood is pointed instead of rounded that is for sure. The rest you will have to ask your parts guy if there is a difference in each of the parts from 10 to 11 that will be your best bet. I do know just changing them will make the world a much prettier place! Best of luck

I have already changed the tail lights. I dont plan on changing the side mirrors or the headlights. All I want to do is get the DRL led strips in front. From all of the reading I have done it doesnt seem that the hood has to be changed. I think the grill may need to be, but not the hood. So far I am in only $300 for the front bumper (used OEM). DRLs and covers will cost me another $350 or so, and I am not sure about the other parts, energy absorber, wheel well, etc. I think my total parts bill will be around $800 or so. Labor will probably be another $700 or so if my body shop doesnt have to paint the bumper (my car is iridium silver just like the bumper i got, hopefully it will match well enouch). I am trying to find out all of the other parts I will need. I am most concerned about hooking up the LED drls. Not sure if they make a wiring kit that goes to the battery or not. I don't want to wire them to the fog light power because I dont want to have to turn on the fogs every time I want the DRLs to come on.

just hook up to the side markers. Many have done that without adding resistors and seem to have no complaints about it.

I was advised to install DLR's to fog lights with resistors. What's the difference or are both fine?

Both methods are fine. From what I gather, the requirement of resistors if connecting to fog lights is to regulate the fluctuating voltage supplied to the fog. The side marker on the other hand has a steady 12v and as such doesn't need a resistor to regulate it.

Hope someone can chime in if am wrong...dont want to mislead you.

That sounds good, however do the headlights have to be on for the DRLs to turn on? I want the DRLs on all the time without having to do anything.

Also what about at night, do they dim automatically or do we lose that functionality by wiring it this way?

I think i found my solution to the LED wiring issue. I found this unit that people recommended for wiring the DRLs directly to the battery: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Daytime-Running-Light-DRL-Relay-Harness-Auto-Control-On-Off-Switch-Universal-/360394205189?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e92b2805&vxp=mtr
I think this will be the best option. It will stay on all the time and I wont have to worry about it.

Now I just need to find the other items I will need. I am not sure what the other parts I will need are. Can someone point me to the energy absorber and wheel well? Are these truly necessary? Will I also have to buy a new grill?

The grill is a FOR SURE. As for the DTRL's If you want them to work all the time then wire them directly to power source that is constant ONLY when the ignition is on. I think the fog lamps of your year had to be turned on (if equipped). I do think you will have to do a little extra wiring to the existing lamps ( if equipped) so you don't get a code on the dash for a lamp outage. I guess they didn't really do much to improve on the S from 07 except for the grille, front bumpers, tail lamps and mirrors. Just that small of a change really makes the car, so much more beautiful. Good choice in the upgrade. I wouldn't even think you need to change the inner fender liners would you?? The absorber you speak of, your talking about the metal structure or the Styrofoam absorber? Those shouldn't cost much at all and you might be able to use a grinder on that to make it work. Think about the mirrors after you get everything all together.

I got a oem front bumper cover, bumper cover grilles, front grill, and LEDs. I need to know the remaining parts I need. People have mentioned an energy absorber and wheel wells. Does anyone know the part numbers for those? I want to make sure I get everything I need to do this.

One thing I can't find is wheel well. Do I need to change those as well? Does anyone know what they are called?

Ok here are the parts for the basic model with the AMG front end
Absorber LH A 221 885 61 37 RH A221 885 62 37 CENTER A 221 885 83 37

The fender wheel housing comes in two parts you need only the front section of each side the numbers are LH A 221 690 33 30 RH A 221 690 29 30

Anything else you need? Also, when you go to order at VIP which is the cheapest price on the net tell them John from Atlantic Tire in Los Angeles CA sent you because they are talking about shutting down the sight.

To OP, do u have a s550 with the amg sport kit or just regular bodykit. Cause what i have been made to understand, if your car already has the amg sport kit, you don't need new absorbers and wheel wells. The facelift bumper should just fit right in with the old absorbers and wheel well.

My car does not have the amg kit on it, it's a standard s550 4matic.

I am a bit confused. I looked up the part numbers you listed, and they come as:

Energy absorber outer w/o AMG, all

it says W/O AMG, however the sticker on the bumper cover I am getting says AMG on it. Would I get the one that is listed as: "energy absorber center w/AMG, all " instead?

No, I'm sorry, I used a car that had a VIN number that has the AMG body cladding and the parts I gave you are CORRECT. I do not know how you got the idea that they are NON AMG bumpers absorbers because they are for AMG cladding. I did not check the NON AMG absorbers for you. I use VIN numbers to keep from making any mistakes.

AMG and NON AMG use the same LH and RH absorbers for 2011 the center is the only one that is different NON AMG center absorber is 22188563337 this is not the one you want. You want the parts I gave you. Now if you want the part number for a CL 63 that might be a different part number. You asked for the AMG front bumper absorber.

Your bumper is obviously as AMG S 550 front bumper skin. The part numbers I gave you are CORRECT.

So I entered the part numbers for the bumpers as you entered into the VIPGermanParts site. This is what it comes out with:

I just wanted to make sure this was correct. The first two part numbers LH A 221 885 61 37 RH A221 885 62 37 are showing up on the top as w/o AMG, and the last item number you gave CENTER A 221 885 83 37 is showing up as w/AMG. I just wanted to double check to make sure this was correct. I appreciate your help.

awesome, i just ordered it and let them know in the comments you recommended them to me. thanks I appreciate it. Hopefully this build goes smoothly.

I talked to my body shop guy and he said if he doesn't have to paint it, I would be looking at around 5-6 hours of labor @ $75 per hour. Seems pretty reasonable.
