Question LSD question

I have an 05 s500, I know these have open diff, I was reading that AMG models like the S65 have 1.5 way LSD.

My question is can it be swapped ( im sure it can) or does it involve me messing with the STAR program to program the new gear?

A LSD swap into a S500 wouldn't be very useful. The car doesn't have enough power to spin the wheels at 60 mph doing a burnout on the pavement. The car already has a LSD alternative. Brakes. But LSDs are far more complicated than open diff. I would imagine it will require the STAR system. Because the ESP will keep trying to brake the rear wheels since it doesn't get the message that there is an LSD in the back.

Thats what im guessing, I really doubt anybody has done this swap, maybe in europe some one has. Personally Ive never messed with the STAR program, or even know where to buy it or else I would mess with it on my own car. the only reason Im asking is because at my local junkyard they have a s65 and I wanted to take the DIFF among other parts to experiment on my car lol

It should be very easy to reprogram the computers to accept a LSD. But without a STAR diag system, its next to impossible unless you get rid of all the electronics in the car.

Read through this thread from Benzworld regarding a Quaife LSD swap. There are several success stories to reference from.

I couldn't find any info on reprogramming car with changes of LSD model. I'd guess that updating the data card would do it, but you need online access (ie: paid license from Mercedes).

there is no requirement for STAR programming if you change out the LSD.

But the problem is the S500 doesn't have a LSD stock, it has an open diff. So to add a S65 LSD you need STAR. That is almost guaranteed. Unless you just get rid of the whole electrical system in the car.

I can see needing STAR for the ESP, unless the plug are the same then im sure no STAR would be needed.

I don't think there are any wires for the open diff on the s500 but i'm pretty sure there are some cables and wires for the s65 lsd. And yes, ESP will be a hassle.

Pretty sure the S65 is also an open diff. I know my CL65 came with an open diff. I installed a Quaife LSD and a LSD is a drop in with no tuning/programming required. The S65 has a completely different (much larger) differential than your S500. If I were you I'd buy a Quaife and install that. Easily the best mod I've done to my car. Even better than the tune, but then again I had a serious traction problem from the open diff which you don't with an S500.

Really?? I would think amg would at least put a 1.5 way considering the power they make only for it to be open diff ??? that blows I really thought they would put a 1.5 way lsd in that line of cars

S65 is open diff. Installing an LSD will require no programming of any kind. It is completely transparent to the cars electronics.

Installing an LSD makes the car hook better on a launch but can also contribute to more instability in inclement weather (back end can step out under hard acceleration instead of just breaking a single rear tire loose), especially with an inexperienced driver. I would assume the reason for MB not installing at the factory was to retain the stability for the 99% that drive these cars daily, in all weather. Most owners don't race.

Whats wrong with this? lol
Ive own a few Nissan 240's with 2-ways so im no stranger to sliding the *** end when it decides to rain lol I mean the weather and wheels break loose officer i think i hit some oil lol.

Yea I know the s500 isnt made for racing compared to other models, but it is fun sliding that *** every once in a while lol
