Humiliated...
So I'm really happy with my 2 month old purchase of an '07 S550 Designo Edition. It did suffer the regular stuff., e.g. mounts, brake pads, front lower arms, charcoal canister, wheels, tires, telematics update, etc., but it was all reflected in a low purchase price, turning it to the best ride I've ever owned. Driving formerly E, SL and earlier S classes, I had something to compare it to.
Oh, and the power, OMG..... A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!
Talking power????? Listen to this....
I'm at a red light, after which the FWY starts. 2 lanes; on the other one, a blue 328i Beemer and a twenty something years old driver, blinking at me and moves her head with like "Hey, shall we try?" and I smile, look forward, pressing the S button, pressing the left steering shifter to 1..... Green light, I press the gas pedal all the way and the car jumps forward like a monster, and the engine sounds better than any Shelby I ever owned and before I shift to 3rd, that darn little girl is already 10-15 yards away, and by the time I reached 4th I could only see her smoke....
Never felt so humiliated in my life....
Here's Edmunds:
328i SULEV Sedan (2.0L 4-cyl. Turbo 8-speed Automatic)
HORSEPOWER 240 hp @ 5000 rpm
TORQUE 255 ft-lbs. @ 1250 rpm
Our cars:
HORSEPOWER 382 hp @ 6000 rpm
TORQUE 391 ft-lbs. @ 2800 rpm
Now where/how did I go wrong?????

BMW N20 2.0 Turbo engines can produce quite some power with a Tune. It can squeeze out easily 300+hp/tq. Pair this with the lower weight of the 3 series and there you go. I wouldn't beat on S for a 3 series. I give the lil cars credit, but cruise and enjoy the beauty and elegance of what the S has to offer...Before buying my S550, I looked into it because my 528 felt underpowered.

Where you went wrong was by not buying an S600 or an AMG. You'd make mincemeat out of almost all bimmers and most any car you'd run up against. I'm guessing you were driving very tame just before the encounter and the car was not woken up. A few sprints in a row would bring it up to snuff. Also, you should just leave it in drive and not try to paddle shift it. The 328i is not a strong car, so you should have walked her. Maybe it was a 335i with 328 badges to make it a sleeper.

What is there to feel humiliated about? You're in a luxury cruiser, not a street racer. The 328's (especially older models) do not even hold a candle to the elegance of the s class. Be proud of what you drive.

Umm, your was a 5.5s car when brand new and hers, if new, is a 5.2s car. Neither is much of a drag race car. If you like stoplight drags, get a different car. 2011 CTSV (4.0s), 1992 Corvette (4.0s), Dodge Charger/Challenger, Chevy SS ,etc. Audi A8 is around 3.8s.

Lol. Why are you surprised? Her car is faster from the factory. Put the tranny in sport mode. Leave suspension in comfort. Torque brake as high as it will allow- 2000-3000 rpms. Release brake and let the auto do its thing.
Btw, you have better chances at high speed roll ons where weight matters less...
