The title says 65 but your post says 63... which one were you looking at?

Your S55 is faster -- more power + lighter than that year S63. The later year S63s are TT V8's which may give the Kompressor a better run for its money.

The early M156 engines also had head bolt issues, so you have to check to make sure the recall work was done. Generally after around mid-year 2009 they came with upgraded head bolts.

There are no upgrades I know of for the M156, as it's naturally aspirated. Well, except for the Weistec supercharger for $20k...

I don't know the precise offset of the wheels, but the W221 chassis wheels will fit your W220 chassis car, so they're not too different.

FWIW, I think the W220 chassis is a better looking car, which is why MB "returned" to more of that look for the W222 chassis cars. Somehow the bulging flared wheel wells don't really work for an SClass, some would say.

Do it! The S63 is stunning, and the bulging rear fenders look great on this car. It's a matter of personal taste. You have to drive a 10 S63 for 30-45 minutes and think long and hard about it. I had a 2008 S 63 and upgraded to a 2012 S63. SOOOOOO glad I did. I LOVE THIS CAR and the 10 S63 you're looking at, to me, looks much more modern than the 04. Looks, drives, and in every way, to me, is better. I'm a BMW 7 series guy to the core, but the S63 looks much nicer to me.

Unless you disagree, in which case, just keep your car.

Could you please explain why you were so glad after upgrading to 12 from 08?

The first S63 I drove was an 08. I happened to come across the 12 that I have now not long after and couldn't believe the difference in the power of the BiTurbo engine compared to the NA. I also thing the updated bumper with LEDs makes it look a lot newer. You should drive one of each before you decide. It was easy for me to give up a few thousand more for a newer one.

For some, newer is better. For some, older is better. For some, better is better. You have to figure out which group you're in.

From an '08 naturally aspirated engine (and head bolt issues, and 7G tronic issues) to a '12 with a TT V8 and transmission issues sorted ... well that would make me happy.

Not happier than with my '06 Kompressor, but I'm certainly NOT a newer is better guy. I buy cars from the inside out, not from the sheet metal in. Looks are just looks -- mechanicals matter more to me. And over time, I think your Kompressor will prove faster, handle better and easier to maintain than ANY W221 chassis car. The W221 65 has more interior luxury than the W220 55k, along with "more modern" looks. Whether that's worth speed, handling and maintenance, is up to you. But you seem to have concluded you want to "upgrade" -- so get the last year of the W221 63 if you can.

I've only driven the W221 65 cars (no 63s, as I knew I wouldn't get out of my Kompressor for a 63), and even the 65 didn't move me out of the W220.

Cheers,

maw

If you have a 2012 car with ABC suspension, it benefits from roll moment distribution. I never hear people talking about that, but I think its a great benefit.
