Replacement key

Anyone know the cost to get a replacement key for 2012 GL450?
Do I have to go to the dealer to buy the key?

Thanks,
GL

I buy my parts from a local MB Indy part-counter. He gets his parts from dealership/distributor, and still able to pass a discount to his customer. I have not purchase any key recently, but you will need a matching registration and driver license to purchase key.

I just purchased one last week. It was right at $375 for the key. That included having it programmed which took about 5 minutes. You will need to show them proof of ownership and it takes about 3-4 days to have the key come in.

Yes I have keyless go. I purchased at RBM Alpharetta, Ga. It programs itself, don't let them try to sell you that BS.

The GL's don't require them to be "programmed". The dealer will need to sync it and that takes about 3 minutes. When I got mine, the dealer said there may be another $150 fee to program the new key which would take about an hour. He then came back 3 minutes later and said the GL's don't require that and it just had to sync up with the car and the other key

OK, my SL required it to be synced. Good to know on the GL.

You only find the missing key -after- you have purchased the new key. Failure to purchase a new key results in old key never be found.

I'm shopping around to get a spare keyless go. Just bought a 2011 GL450 that came with 1 keyless remote and no blade key. I was thinking made there is some kind of cloning devices out there.

There are a few options :

1) Stealership - expect to pay about $350 to $600 for the fob and programming.

2) Found this shop in NY that does it for $175 any key, catch is that you'll have to either take your car there, or ship them your console along with the main key, they program the second key and send the whole package back. While this is going on, you can't use your vehicle.

3) Found another guy on ebay that's selling virgin keys for about $70. But this needs to be programmed, which only again, a stealership can do. Some dealers charge about $80-$150 for programming - nevermind if the process takes 120 seconds.

4) Smart Key cloning device computers can be sourced for around $3000 to $4000, if your last name is Smith, and first name Lock.

Take your pick.

I called two locksmith shops in Atlanta and they were actually higher than the dealership. They quoted right around $400

I think the cheapest i found in Los Angeles was $300 for the blank and $80 for programming + tax, about $420 out the door. And this was for the one with NO keyless go package. If you do go to the dealership, just remember to take the DMV registration or the original Title that has your name on it.

I would have thought the after market blokes would be way cheaper - I am in Australia and I found a mobile bloke (who really specialised in Mercs and BMW ) who did it for $250 Australian - which would only be about $180 ish US

He took about half an hour to do it ( normal 3 button key) and that included the cost of blank - and cutting the metal blade to work as well

There seemed to be a bit of mucking around getting numbers from MB website (I think that was where he got it?) etc so I thought it was good value -

Replacement Key

My dealer in St. Louis is giving me the runaround on fixing issue with my 2012 GL550 randomly not starting or recognizing the key to unlock the doors. They have told me new keys have been on b/o since October 2023. Does anyone know where I can get a key?

I recently saw on a W212 Facebook group that Mercedes discontinued sales of pre-2012 Keyless Go keys due to security problems. I assume referring to the ability of criminals to use devices that allow them to intercept communication between the vehicle and key and later use them to steal the vehicle. No idea if accurate, but it is consistent with people having problems getting keys. The same post said you can still get non-keyless go keys.

which should be the workaround I do anyway… Keyless go is just a nightmare. We just ended up losing the keys multiple times.

KG has the potential for disaster as well as getting your car stolen. I've driven away twice without a key in my pocket after dropping a person off with a key (which allowed the car to start). Fortunately, I realized it both times before turning the car off or I would have had a big problem. I never had any issues with the KG hardware on my GL, but I've replaced both door handles (which have KG hardware in them) on the driver's side on my ML with used parts because the doors weren't unlocking, and it was causing the windows to roll down when you locked them. The rear seat handle is periodically throwing codes again so I may be on the market for another used handle soon. Nice convenience , but I could live without it.

New Key

I just bought a key… had the keyless go but don’t like it so I just bought a normal key and removed the keyless. The key comes to the dealership ready to go (without keyless) NO programming ..I paid $200 plus $70 for the emergency door key.
