Talking you get what you pay for? What about in performance?

What is crazy is these C class model variants do exactly what Apple products do.
You got the
C300 which gets a respectable 0-60 time of 6.0 seconds msrp $41,675 (sport package)
C450 0-60 4.6 seconds msrp $52,000
C63 0-60 4.0 seconds msrp $65,200
C63s 0-60 3.9 seconds msrp $72,800

So to go 1.4 seconds faster (C300 versus C450) will cost you an additional $10,325

So to go 2.0 seconds faster (C300 versus C63) will cost you an additional $23,525

So to go 2.1 seconds faster (C300 versus C63s) will cost you an additional $31,125

Yes you do get additional standard equipment as you move up the line but the main selling point is performance. would anyone buy a c63s if it it had the same 0-60 time as the C300? Actually don't answer that!

I mean yeah it looks pretty damn sweet but $31,000 sweeter? I could easily make a C300 look like a c63 for less than that. What about for track days? I could buy a Subaru WRX new for about $27k and have that as my exclusive track car and have cash left over for replacement tires and brakes.

So yes everything is relative and I could get a Nissan Versa and it would still get me to my destination. But I'm just making the point that we will pay to have the top of the line even if it comes at a ridiculous price point.
So we can all feel better (except for C300 owners) if you look at cost per horsepower the C63 offers the best value by $4 a horse!
C300 $172
C450 $143
C63 $139
C63s $145

It's No different than Apple charging $100+ more for a few more gigs of memory in your phone or computer.

Moral of the story: Buy what you want. As Salt n Peppa once said...You only live once and you're not coming back so express yourself!

MBZ always has more power and torque, but always a few fractions of a second slower than the competition. To squeeze out that extra few fractions you lose alot of smootheness. The diminishing returns on power increases really hits hard after 4 seconds. Even in the smaller engines, stretching the transmission and the engine to their max output does unbalance the scales between smoothe comfortable accel/decel, and a twitchy car.

i don't mean to be offensive but that sounds a bit fan boy... can you back up the power and torque claims that mb is superior?

If you have to dissect out your purchase as the OP has done in the first post, then you should not be buying a c63/s. Those who buy the 63/63s do so out of a passion for driving and the visceral thrill the car delivers each and every mile

+1

And it's definitely not something you compare to an iPhone. Apple asks an excessive amount of money for 32GB (minimal hardware), while an AMG engine is a masterpiece of engineering.

Yeah, I'd rather spend the money and have the C63 for the great V8 sound and the exclusive front bodywork. It's quite a bit more imposing than a normal 205.

No offense at all, i have no problem admitting to be a fanboy. my first car when i was 15 was a 540 and ive driven alot of brands but im 100% biased to mercdes.

until recnetly on the amg gt/s they hadnt learned to tune down their torque to get more grip. I could make you a spreadsheet of all the hp/tq@rpm figures from their spec sheets, and an overwhelming amount of mbz cars have higher #s then their competitors.

However, theyre always slower. Its intentional imo. You only referred to the part where i said they are higher #s, not that it doesnt amount to actual faster vehicles. A bmw or audi/porsche or ford can get better times with lower #s for many reasons, but one i think is stretching to the power limits. mbz seems to intentionally have higher #s with less output, to keep the engine tame.

they win in real f1 type races all the time so we know they can win. But their street vehicles, even the v12s, have ridiculous #s like 700tq, but the same times as a cla 45 or aston with 450 tq.

even the cla45, higher hp than its competitors, but the same if not lower times

So i just mean, in relation to the op, i agree 100%. the extra few fractions of a second from the 63 to the 63s isnt worth the $.

personally i thought the C43 for me was the sweet spot. the C300 doesnt have P1 standard so you have to add another ~$2000 just for that (and really everyone on these boards would get at least P1 on a C300). not to mention the AWD system. a c300 + p1 + 4matic + lip spoiler + heated seats is only $6000 less than a C43. So all that stuff I wanted. So for $6k you get all the AMG suspension stuff including the 3 stage AMG ride control, 9G tronic, the different steering rack , exhaust, the engine, and little tiny things like blacked out window surrounds / dinamica seats and red seatbelts if you wanted them. All of the steering and suspension things won't help in 0-60 but well 0-60 is definitely not everything

Couldn't justify the leap to the c63 given ii can't even really use that power, but for $6k seemed like a performance bargain

I wrote this not dissecting my purchase but more of just an rough non scientific analysis of why we are willing to shell out up to $30k more for just 2.1 seconds.

If all was equal in terms of options. And the window sticker mentioned nothing about amg but just listed:
the price - the amount of horsepower - and the 0-60 time.
Which option would you go with?

Reading the various posts where owners change exhausts flash ecu's we are performance hungry but would it not be a better value to go c450 and add on good quality performance mods to even out 0-60 times to that of c63s?

Sure an amg one person one engine is oh so sweet but the engines gain in power versus 10 robots 10 engines 10 minutes just doesn't seem as good of a deal. And you are right, in the sense that the buyer of a C63s isn't looking for a deal or value.
They are looking for the best or nothing!

Not like Apple? Say I want a new iPhone. That new 7 at $649 is pretty sweet.I don't need that much memory since I have everything in the cloud. Oh but what about that new much hyped engineering masterpiece, dual rear facing camera? Oh not available in the iPhone 7 ok fine I'll step up to the 7plus. And in case I decide to store everything on my phone lets go with top of the line - iphone 7plus jet black finish 256gigs. Final price $969! 49% increase C300 to C63s 70% increase
