1999 SL 500, Center vent problem
Hi Guys,
just took this SL on trade, so not very familiar with it.
The center vent is not blowing. So far, the previous owner changed the heater/ac vent vacuum block. He tells me that it works on & off. Sometimes it does not, sometimes it does.
In manual mode, I can get the directional arrows to light up in the Up or down or up & down position, but CANNOT get the horizontal one to light up at all, and the center vents to blow.
I've read a million post on the center vents issues.
So just wondering if I should be able to make the center vent work in manual mode by pressing the air distribution button until the horizontal arrow lights up on the LCD panel (which it does not at this time)
I did check for codes on the vent module, There were none.
Thanks for your help.

Out Of Control!!
My analysis is that if cold air exits the center vent while in auto------but does not exit while in manual mode(center vent knob) the switch over valve and flap element are good--the issue is with the center nozzle adjuster potentiometer located within center vent. Change the vent and solve the problem.
If that is not the case then it's either the flap element and or the center vent!!

Check the vacuum block, easy inspection with a mirror. If cracked, replace it. Most common issue with central vents not working.

OK, playing with the center vent, I go the air to blow from the center in auto or manual mode. The only thing that is driving me nuts is that the LCD arrow on the control module display doesn't light up in the face mode. it does in the windshield direction and the feet direction but not in the face. Isn't it suppose to turn black when the center vent is operating

Horizontal Bar
The horizontal bar will NOT light unless you press either the Red or Blue square button on the center vent. Each has a tiny red light when it is pushed. This may be your problem.
