Problems shifting from Park

Good day everyone. Just recently (within the last week or so) I started noticing the shifter sort of getting stuck and me having to force it out of Park into reverse or anything else. Any ideas what could be happening here? I don't drive the car hard and am always very careful. It seems like the shifter gate has an issue or maybe the transimission. Once out of Park all gears shift perfectly and I have no problems aside form that.

I think I am going to pickup extended warranty because I also am having an issue with the trunk and the self closing of it. I have to force the trunk to close all the way.

Repair Solution

I have the plastic part in stock and I can ship worldwide. Log on to www.monoglobal.com.au to view and order the part.

Internal plastic lever is there to prevent children from inadvertedly moving the gearstick lever out of Park. Removing the lever may cause your car to roll away down a hill with your kids inside.

Choose from original plastic or high strength aluminum. Repairs can be done by any reputable MBZ shop in about an hour or two. No need for recoding with Star Diagnosis.

The dealer had to replace the whole shifter and now it is working perfectly.

Shifter replacement

As this forum is a few years old I wanted to add my 2c in here.

Our shifter started getting stuck a couple of weeks ago and now it won't move at all. The mechanic is going to install a used shifter (part no 2302674924) at a cost of approx $450 for part and $200-$300 labour.

The part from the Mercedes dealer was going to be $966 for a new one plus labour.

Let me just tell you that this 2003 SL500 has been an absolute nightmare and I will never buy one of these cars again, Since April 2013 when we bought it with 39k miles on it the following repairs have been done:
- ABC pump had to be replaced
- A/C stopped working, couldn't find leak with dye, twice
- cooling fan had to be replaced
- fuel cap had to be replaced
- ABC pressure hose had to be replaced
- Now the shifter is being replaced and the alternator too
