Insurance
So, I just went through a colonoscopy without anesthesia or lubricant, a.k.a. "insurance renewal" and thought I'd see what others have found.
Before I traded the CLK550 for the SL550, I checked to make sure insurance costs were not going to be crazy. My agent said to expect a small increase, maybe $10/month. It ended up being $9.
o, a few weeks ago, a few months after I traded, we decided to let the kid (who turned 22 this week) have her own insurance policy. I signed the C240 over to her and helped her find a policy for herself. Note that she had never been on our policy as this is our granddaughter, but she drove the C240 which was our spare, 3rd car.
Anyhow, with the loss of this "3rd car discount" and a "regularly scheduled rate increase", our insurance went UP! I was pretty angry so I started shopping. I needed to insure the 2011 SL550 and a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have no tickets or accidents and have excellent credit, so we should be a good risk. Well, imagine my surprise when several companies I shopped wanted to charge outrageous prices for the SL! Our current policy is about $1500 per year.. One company (Allstate) actually quoted me over $2200 JUST FOR THE SL! On our current policy (AARP/Hartford) the SL is actualyl slightly cheaper than the Jeep.
Anyhow, we use an independent agent, and he shopped for us and actually did some "work" and got us better coverage (higher limits) for the same (higher renewal ) rate. That satisfied me, as I don't mind paying more and getting more. I was just curious what others have found when insuring their SL's.

If you are/were in military, or spouse is, get USAA insurance. Have never seen better.
Our 4 car stable for our 58 YO drivers is $2200/year. SL is third on the list for cost.
Have not served your country? Sorry, or find a military bride.

USAA here also. Fifty-second year with the company. Annual premium: $2458.96. We're in Mississippi, where about 2/3 of the vehicles on the road are uninsured. I don't know what my rate would be today in Virginia, where we spent most of our adult lives (Richmond), but my rate doubled when we moved to the Magnolia State.
Now:
2007 SL550
2007 E350
71 year old me. 67 year old child bride.
I wouldn't give another insurance company the time of day.

I'm with Farmer's, $250 collision deductible, $100 comp and 500,0000 liability. I was $900 per year, went to $1,100 per year this month on renewal. I've had excellent service from my local agent.

+1 on USAA. I'm currently with AAA, works great for me. Almost half less than my previous insurance. My sis is in the process of switching from Farmers to AAA due to price increase. AAA quoted my 05 SL500 for ~1300/year.

No military service, so no USAA for me. But I do feel better about our $1400/year premium covering both the SL and Jeep. We carry 100/250/500 limits, 250 deductible, but we do NOT carry Uninsured Motorist. In Alabama, that only cover my medical payments should an uninsured motorist be at fault. It does not cover property damage, and it;s expensive - another $800 per year. I have medical insurance and AFLAC, so I passe don that.

Then you're in the good price range. I would have paid more, just because i'm 28 y.o. As of now i would pay only for the SL that much, even considering it a 2nd car, not a daily driver.

I thought 25 was the last age for price breaks, but of course if you are single, that makes a difference - married people get lower rates. What really surprised me was the quote I got from Allstate - they wanted $2,200 per year JUST for the SL, the wife's jeep was another $800 or so (basically comparable to what we pay for the Jeep now). That was higher deductibles and lower limits than I carry. I also checked Progressive online - they were double what we pay, although my independent agent also writes through them and got a much better rate, except our homeowner's would go up. I had similar results with a quote from Geico - car rates were about what we pay now, but homeowner's almost doubled. I'm fairly happy with my rates, except that now I pay the same for two cars, where a few months ago, that rate paid for three cars!
