*SL63 + LONG TUBE HEADERS + EXHAUST + TUNE = ??

With our developement contuinally growing in the Mercedes 63 range engines,we had the pleasure of doing some exhaust development work on a forum members SL63.Working with our exhaust development partner in melbourne(Di Fillipo Performance Exhaust). We loaded Bens63 on a carrier and sent it of to melbourne to have custom headers biult along with a exhaust system to match.Once the system is jigged then we can request changes to the system for further developement.Bens SL63 had the following mods,

- 1 3/4 Long Tube Headers
- 3inch 200cell stainless cats
- Dual 3inch stianless mid section
- Rear stainless silencers
- 2 x k&n filters
- Custom tune to suit mods

- The results were a healthy 321rwkw's / 430hp at the treads. On the road the torque delivery was incredible with sharp throttle response,With loads of torque on tap, this SL63 is one to keep your eye out for with the perfomance to match the AMG badge !!!

- We will have the car return further down the track to make some changes to the exhaust to see if we can better the power gain.

Below is the video, click on the link to watch...

How much Horsepower did you gain?

and what type of dyno do you use. The set up looks really neat, but 430 seems a little low. do you have any check engine light switched on?

Before the install the car dynoed 387hp in stock form, around a 25% loss from the headline 517hp number.
Wheelspin affected the post dyno number by an guestimated 10-15hp. So we gained at least 43hp perhaps >50hp. I think more importantly, we picked up 100Nm of torque across virtually the entire rev range. The dyno was a Mainline dyno

Thank you. So how does a mainline dyno compare with dynodynamic?

Marranos headers for the SL63 is a 4 into 1 type headers. I believe specifically for the SL63, a Try-Yi headers design, will give more power.

Look at this from MBH:
http://www.mbworld.org/forums/sl55-a...neak-peek.html

That particular SL63 made 460 rwhp. thats 90 rwhp extra from stock form. they had a renntech Airbox installed, but remember they kep the stock secondary cats and factory exhusts. The only modification was the headers. You could call Ron or Mike @ Dynocomp for more info.

I like the Marranos set up alot. Any right handed driver, should defenitley go with the Marranos

No check engine lights with exhaust or tunes, our tuning is complete custom to suit mods

Thanks for the kind words, though a tri y header will never as much hp as a long tube header. We have done countless hours of testing. In our long tube headers we use supercar collectors, the key in our header is the step down at the collector, this maintains velocity in the headers to maintain the lown down power & torque, while keeping the top end power.

Your welcom man. Nice tuning. The tri yi for the SL63 that MBH is offering is a long tube. It is a Tri-Yi Long tube headers. It alone makes 38-45 horsepower and +40 torque, guranteed for the SL63.
check this out
http://www.dynocomp.com/details.php?...80#detail_1042

there is a dyno chart both from Evosport and MBH with tryi yi headers for the SL63 and they both made more than 43 rwhp. (+70 from MBH, +55 from EVosport)

The Try-Yi longtube from MBH has a better scavenging effect than the one from Evosport

I,m not going to get into a whose best here, but a dyno dynamics dyno graph paper isnt worth the paper its wrtten on unless the operator is honest, and secondly long or short, tri y's will never be as good as a long tube 4into one's.

I think Evosport and MBH have honest dynos.I'm not dissing your mods, but +43 rwhp with headers, tune, and filters is a bit low . I'm pretty confident the SL63 with MBH longtubes would beat your SL63 on the track. The only way we could find out is with a race

As Carol Shelby once said "horsepower sells cars , torque wins races".
I'll take the 100 Nm / 75ft/lbs increase in torque Sonny got thank you very much!

I agree %100

Sonny, I have a question....

That SL63, did it have an Ecu tune, prior to installing the headers? I think I saw it previoulsy on youtube in your warehouse with a tune but without the exust system.

I was checking the dyno results again on your video. The SL initially made 688 NM. That has to be a tuned 63 Engine, because the SL makes around 630 NM Stock.

If thats the case, then I take everything I said back and your exhust system is the most powerful system I have seen for the SL63

By the way how much does this system cost?

This is my car and it was completely stock prior to sending it to Sonny. I too was surprised at the 'before' torque numbers. There is no mistaking the difference between the before and after numbers though. On the road the car is truly brutal.

Did you buy it new or used. The Ecu might have been reflashed and you dont know about it. 688NM is defenitley not stck form.

prior to installing all the mods, Did your SL go past 250 km/hr?

or does your car have the performance package with the LSD and performance brakes, if thats the case then the speedometer should not exceed the 300 Km/h mark.

I think you'll find a F1 car to be the quickest round a track, it doesn't have that much torque though.
Anyway, you guys make works of art, there so good that the car looks better upside down. All that work and all that money for barely a 10% increase, soon
forgotten. Then there's turbo cars, a quick re map and a extra 50 to 100 no
probs. Not fair is it.

I am no expert, far from it but F1 cars are so light that perhaps torque is not the key issue for them.

As you well know, the SL63 is one of the most detuned of the 63 engines so squeezing more hp out of it pretty tough unless you reatlly start thowing dollars out of it. We were specifally interested in improving torque sub 5000rpm becuase thats where i spend most of my time and on that front a 100Nm increase Sonny achieved is impressive.

FWIW I was told when i purchased the car from mercedes that the car had never been tracked and never flashed. It was owned by an elderly man not a young punk like me. Perhaps this engine is a factory freak torque wise And i have not had the opportunity to hit the speed limiter yet to see if it has been flashed. If it was flashed i am not sure why the stock hp number would remian standard but the torque increased a lot.
