Getting back into an AMG
I'm looking at a 2011 designo mystic white with beige interior sls 18k miles, one owner, clean carfax, b&o sound system, msrp 195k. What is a reasonable offer assuming it's in great condition?

Do you have a list of options as this will help decide the price? Can you send me the vin as well and I'll be happy to help? Please describe the overall condition as well. Thanks?

I would think around $150k +/- $5k is market value for the purchase price?
Hard to say what's true market value since there are so few of these sold and options between a low versus high car could be $40k+.

That dealer seems to have very reasonable prices for the SLS cars they have. Although all seem to be low optioned cars.

PPI?
Do you guys feel that a PPI is necessary? The vehicle is being purchased at the Mercedes dealership.
https://www.autoipacket.com/packet-s...ServiceHistory
The link above is a service history of the vehicle when it was obtained by the dealership back in october 2016. I've attached the link to what was performed upon arrival at the dealership. They stated they already did a CPO inspection when they obtained it. Do you believe an independent PPI is needed and also what experience do you guys have with 3rd party extended warranties?
Thanks

Stay away from 3rd party warranties if possible. 3rd party warranties are mostly companies that refuse to pay for anything, so you have to fight tooth and nail to get anything covered. Pay the extra and get a MBZ warranty if the car doesn't have one already. If 3rd party is your only choice AND you want to get one still, make sure it's an exclusionary warranty. Meaning instead of the warranty stating what IS COVERED, it states what's NOT COVERED. Less chance they argue what broke is not part of the "covered" parts.
In general, these cars seem to be fairly reliable. But most are so low mileage that it's not surprising that you don't have many bad stories. The motors are renowned for being built well, but if it lets go, you might have to take a 2nd mortgage to fix it.

They said they cannot CPO bc of the open recall on the airbag. I may hold out on the 3rd party then since the mileage is fairly low. Will Mercedes do any sort of warranty with the open airbag recall?

Myself and another forum member here, have purchased the same 3rd party warranty. He has used it with no issue. Reality is there are so many low miles cars it's hard to say how reliable the SLS will be for those that actually put some miles on them. Look at the cars for sale now, there are a couple really well driven cars out there. Check the carfaxs to see how they have done.

Was this car in an accident? Why was the hood and bumper refinished?

I would go PPI on this one.

Gatorade, I just picked up a 2012 within the last month and would second Newport's recommendation about a PPI. I also went further and found a paint correction specialist to do a non-mechanical PPI for paint irregularities and a thorough inspection of all the bodywork and fasteners. I ended up doing PPIs on 4 cars until I settled on the one I purchased. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind!
I find it interesting that the car is being sold by the MB dealer as 2 GSMs from 2 different dealerships told me that they would not sell used SLSs due to the recall - all of their lease returns immediately went to auction. Are they selling this as a consignment or courtesy to a valued customer?
I've been tied up the last week and a half but also intend to get an extended warranty - just been slammed.
BTW - the car is beautiful.

Just got back from Boston. The car is in extremely good condition both inside and outside. They even placed the car on the lift for me. I was told the same thing about Mercedes selling the vehicle directly through the dealership and they said they would use a 3rd party for the sale, however, when I got there they planned to sell the vehicle directly from their dealership with the 2month/2500 mile lemon law warranty. Just curious if I should take this as a good faith gesture that they are confident with the vehicle.

Gatorade - did you verify that the lemon law warranty is enforceable if you take the car out of the state of MA? I had the similar situation as my car was in the state of NM with 15 days/750 miles but it is void when you register the car out of state. I researched this and ultimately got them to reduce the price instead.
Doing a quick check of the "Lemon Aid Law" in Massachusetts, it looks like you are entitled to the 60 day/2500 miles anyway! Again, there may be a proviso about registering in the state of MA. If they are willing to honor it outside of MA, how will it work? Can your local dealer direct bill MBoBurlington? For me, I still stand by the recommendation of a PPI - so instead of the warranty, perhaps they would be willing to pay to have the car inspected by someone like Herb Chambers, Natick, Somervile or even Westwood? There are tons of Mercedes Dealers in Boston who could do a PPI.

Just got off the phone with the dealer. Yes, as you stated the dealer has to honor a two-month 2500 mile warranty regardless of the vehicles location. The downside however they said that if there was any issue that they would have to find a way to ship the car back up to their dealership.
I have a home in New York City therefore my plan would be to keep the car in New York City for at least the first two months of ownership in case any issues arise, then ship the vehicle down to Florida for the remainder of its time

Glad you got to see it. For that kind of money I would still do a PPI
