Finally ordered and got mine in! Its a W221 trunk star and it roughly measures 85mm or 3.25in. The edges do line up despite the optical illusion on the photo- I measured 3 times
Stay tuned for installed pics...

Results!
SO yesterday I got around to finishing the Star Emblem project. I am happy with the results. Full disclosure obligates me to say that I feel like it is a mm too low from center but to the naked eye this is not visible unless you are 1 ft away. The star outlines are not the same so if you are picky, this will drive you nuts. To the casual looker though it turned out well IMO.
Before
Make sure to align estimate 2-3 times. I found that centering the emblem ever so slightly higher gives the best results. I tried to center the outer circles- on the cover aligned with trunk star along with the center pieces. Special thanks to my lovely assistant. I used some marking wax and applied it to the end of the 3 prongs of the back of trunk star. This gave me a guide to drill.
I believe the drill bit was a 5/32. This will likely need to be drilled out larger to accommodate spacing for the prongs and detailed positioning. My holes ended up a little larger than the prongs on the back of the emblem. This is the longest most tedious part. Be patient and careful with the drilling.
After drilling not pushed down or glued in.
Final
In the end how it turns out is how much time you prepare. I secured it using JB Weld I had left over. I put a soft yoga ball atop of it and let it cure. Im satisfied for a piece that is only seen occasionally. The reward though is not having it missing!!
Thoughts?
