Door Handle Replacement DIY
Hey guys, I had to replace the door handle as the lock button didnt work anymore. Figured i would do a diy for others that might have this issue.
Here is the replacement piece
Open the door, and remove the inside weatherstrip at this location
You will then see a screw hole. Take a torx wrench and loosen the screw.
You can then gently remove the lock assembly
I personally didn't know if the screw would fall into the door so I actually taped the torx to the door temp while maintaining forward pressure
Gently slide the handle toward the back of the car and It will pop out
Using needle nose plyers remove the sensor
Slide the new one in making sure that the rubber gaskets are seated properly and the "L" piece of the handle fits behind this gold piece in the door
Push the lock back in and screw it back down
Test and all should be well! One of the things you can actually replace without having to code the darn thing using Star! Really simple to do!

Every person I know with keyless go at one point had there doors not working.
Right now 2 of mine dont work.It started with my drivers door and I was using the rear door when it went out and now both doors dont work.
Do these come painted?

Cool thread. I wish I was a DIY-er and could handle such things.
Funny thing is that I just had it done at dealer yesterday - under warranty, thankfully. Sounds like a rather common problem.

around $100 or so
same thing, sensors are in the handles. That is why I replaced it.
yup they do
pretty simple. To remove the inner door panel, there are only a few hidden screws.
One for the latch, one under the SRS logo patch, one under the panel by the tweeter, and two under the panel that pops out under the door armrest handle.

.
I wonder if the door handles have "left side" and "right side" versions.... or if one part number fits any of the 4 doors (unlikely).
It would be nice to swap one of my "working" handles to the drivers door just to get things going again. It would be a good troubleshooting tool as well to confirm that it was only a handle issue and not a problem with one of the receivers.
To the OP: Nice writeup! Thanks for taking the time to post this.

Thanks for the write up. I just replaced my drivers door in under 20 minutes, and that was being real careful and taking my time.
The part cost me $144 shipped from Parts.com
On Parts.com, navigate to your year and model of W211 and follow the navigation:
Front Door > Lock and Hardware > Handle Outside > W/keyless
For driver's side (Left Hand Drive) it is labeled "Left"
For example, my car is white, so the correct part on their website was called,
"Front door, Lock and Hardware, Handle Outside, White Left"

Thank you very much.
A note to everyone else. Before ordering, unplug and replug the electrical connection. My dealer ordered the part and turned out he did not need to since it was just an electrical contact problem. He replaced it anyway since it was a warrantee item at the time.

my door handle just started acting up. it works intermittedly... is that how yours was before it completely went out? or is mine just a connection issue?

i just looked up the part on Parts.com, looks like it went up in price, it's $144 before shipping now... does anyone have the actual part number for it and somewhere cheaper to get the part from?

i just got an email back from them saying that the part is unavaliable... not sure why. i just cancelled my order since it seems that my handle is working fine for now...
here's the link, if it doesn't work just follow Front Door > Lock and Hardware > Handle Outside > W/keyless

Thanks for sharing the info! It's great that people take the time and effort to generate these DIYs. For me though I am curious what part actually failed in it. Maybe just the sensor inside needs replaced or even just a solder joint. German engineering produces excellent performance, but their electronics suck! Often it's a broken trace or bad solder joint that takes 10 minutes to fix! It may be just a bad microswitch in it .. seems a waste to replace an entire handle for what may be something small. Please don't take me the wrong way ... I like to get to root cause
