RTH: IC oil level reading

Got a Visit a workshop engine oil level. Pulled over and went into the diag mode and says 4.2-4.5QTS in engine. How much do I need to add? Car tells me 2 at next refuel.

How many quarts do I need

no dont add 4. start with 2 and recheck. interesting though because you should have had a message previously to add 1 quart. dont know why it would go straight to 2.

I made it home after adding 1.5Qt and got the IC reading exactly 5qt at idle and slow revs.

I had the add 1 at at next refueling and I am getting an oil change Tuesday so didn't think much of it. 10 miles down the road it was telling me to shut off engine and add oil/visit workshop immediately. I did the oil level check and told me to add 2qts so I added 1qt and re checked. Then told me to add another 1.5qt so I added a half a qt. I figured I have been on the same oil for 4,000 miles so 1 quart probably got sent through the exhuast and the other half quart was to top off. Wasn't too sure how accurate the reader was and with no dipstick I figured 1.5qts was a safe amount. Made it 200 miles back home with no lights or oil level warnings.

you are supposed to read the ic oil level with engine oil hot and after the car has sat engine off for 5-10 minutes. do not pay attention to the number with engine running it means nothing.

Could also be your oil level sensor? Have you ever changed it? For 120ish bucks, it could be worth it at your next oil change. Literally 3 screws.

Oil level sitting right at 6qt's on the IC. Car is running perfect. Getting the oil level sensor changed with the oil tomorrow. Car still saying add 1QT but I'm leaving it until MB takes a look at it.

Thanks guys.

Oil level sensor. Very common and easy fix.
