2018 W213 E63 AMG Getting Closer
#26
Just popped up on C&D:
http://www.caranddriver.com/news/201...-and-info-news
"The 4.0-liter V-8 for the first time is fitted with a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, resulting in 563 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in the basic, non-S model. The sprint from zero to 60 mph takes a mere 3.4 seconds, according to Mercedes, and top speed is limited to 155 mph. In the E63 S, engine output reaches a new high of 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft, the latter delivered on a plateau that stretches from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The S reaches 60 mph in a factory-estimated 3.3 seconds, with its top speed capped at 186 mph."

Thanks for the C&D post. Looks kind of the same. Though it's no 5.5, the current model will drop in value with this 4.0 news.
Why aren't forged wheels and carbon ceramic brakes standard on the S? It would make the S a bit more different than the standard car. They are too similar.

Just doesn't look as aggressive or sharp from any angle. Too rounded of a shape.

Almost thought it was a M5 in that 3rd picture from bottom.
Interior is obviously much better, but the exterior really softened up. Im not a fan of 20" wheels either. Prefer the 19" setup.

The rear kills it. That interior though... The one gripe I have though is this move to the column shifter. It feels like something is missing without the shifter but I understand that the command controls take the place.

The front quarter looks m5ish but that interior is *****.
That really is a nice color combination.
I still hate those cheap looking rear calipers.

Nice power/torque bump but aren't those 0-60 numbers the same as the current gen E63? Looks like these cars will still be sluggish out of the hole.

Only explanation ion I can think of is that the power figures for the new model may not be underrated, whereas for the current 5.5 model the real numbers are possibly more powerful than the new one
also, the article says it's replacing the wet clutch with a torque converter now for the new transmission. I don't know if that's good or bad but typically I know torque converters make less power to the ground.

but still, the question above still stands. Here we have more power and less weight but still the same 0-60 as current model. Doesn't make sense if you ask me.

Have to admit the guys responsible for taking those pics/ angles and presentation did an amazing job, including the color combo. Made a bland car sexy

I have never seen any official Mercedes literature that posts anything besides 3.6 (0-100 km/h, ie. 0-62 mph) for the E63S. Granted, I haven't looked very hard...is there any?

No, and I have seen testing as low as 3.2 seconds
so if advertised is now 3.4 then maybe this new one is 3.0-3.1... that's a big deal for a car this big
how will race start work with a torque converter?

yea maybe the torque converter allows for take off with no lag before it goes. If that solved it then that alone would make me want to upgrade to new model
but still, the question above still stands. Here we have more power and less weight but still the same 0-60 as current model. Doesn't make sense if you ask me.

This new e63S more than the c63S reminds me, when I look at the front, of the Amg gts....the back reminds me of the c300

Race Start could easily work with a torque converter.
In the drag racing world where we have engines with 2000+hp (my camaro) We utilize a feature in the transmission to apply multiple bands together at the same time, typically first gear and reverse. This locks the transmission and prevents it from moving.
You then use a 2 step (adjustable rev limiter on the engine) to allow the engine to stay at a set rpm, then you release the reverse band and hang on
So the torque converter really should have no ill affect on Race Start.

I think now the same might be true with this one
at least compared to the w205, this bulbous style
seems to flow much nicer on the w213. Still not a fan especially of those tail lights...
