Jeweled 1959 Mercedes-Benz Once Owned by Muhammad Ali
The exact whereabouts of this unique Mercedes-Benz once owned by Muhammad Ali are unknown. But it has likely become a highly prized piece of automotive memorabilia in the wake of the great boxing legend’s recent death.
The car, which has just resurfaced in a Jalopnik report, was apparently up for auction in 2014, as you can see in the video profile below. But whether it was actually sold remains a bit of a mystery.
What we do know is that the ‘Benz was decorated with 270 precious jewels, including diamonds. And it has been reported that the 1959 Mercedes Gold Angel Wing featured a bumper, grill, buttons, knobs, and switches all made from 23-karat gold. All told, The Champ’s former Benz tallied an appraisal of $1.5 million.
There were some earlier speculations that the car might end up in a museum one day, which seems even more likely now, given the various tributes being planned for Muhammad Ali.
