Stirling Moss is a name that should be familiar to racing enthusiasts, especially Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts. After all, it was in a Mercedes-Benz that Stirling Moss won his first Forumula 1 race, the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree.

1955 would be a big year for Stirling Moss, who was just 25 at the time. He would go on to win the Tourist Trophy, the Targa Florio, and, most importantly for Mercedes fans, the Mille Miglia. Driving a 300 SLR, Moss crossed the finish line and cemented Mercedes-Benz’s place in sports car racing history forever.

To commemorate this feat, Mercedes-Benz began building several special versions of their already limited-production SLR McLaren in 2006. The first, called the “722” in reference to Moss’ racing number in the 1955 Mille Miglia, was followed up by the 722 Roadster S and the 722 GT, which was used for a one-make racing series.

The car seen here – the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss – is a speedster variant, employing no roof or windscreen. Weighing 440 pounds less than the coupe, its production was limited to only 75 units, and availability was reserved for existing SLR owners.

While the original price was around $800,000, its performance, exclusivity, and legendary namesake have caused prices to rise considerably in the few short years since production, and the example seen here is offered up at an eye-watering $2.8 million dollars. Interested?
