E63S AMG 4Matic+: Drift Master Gets it Slideways

By -

Tsuchiya Keiichi sure knows how to shred tires, even when not driving a traditional drifting machine.

When the WEB|CAR YouTube channel puts drifting king Tsuchiya Keiichi behind the wheel of an AMG product at Fuji Speedway, it’s bound to make for an immensely entertaining video. Of course, we don’t understand a word of Japanese (except “Dorifutomōdo;” we know what that means). However, we are fluent in AMG’s 4.0-liter turbo throaty exhaust note. And we love hearing that V8 run up and down the rev range. Mercedes bills the E63S 4Matic+ as the most powerful E-class ever made, and it comes with mode allowing a pretty massive slip angle. We like where this video is going.

Drift Mercedes AMG E63

After taking the car out for a few laps on track, Keiichi-san seems to have enjoyed his time behind the wheel. The car runs fast, makes all the right noises, and sets a stellar lap time for the huge beast that it is. That practically guarantees a positive review. When you see the smile that this car puts on his face, you know the AMG a good one.

In the next test, the drifting ace sets the car to Drift Mode and runs around a figure-8 course for a while. After some lurid slides that get the rear of the car to step out well beyond the norm, Tsuchiya gives the car his seal of approval.

Does the Mercedes AMG E63 4Matic+ make sense as a race car or even a track day toy? Not really, but it’s a ridiculously fast family sedan. This video proves, however, that if you wanted to take your family sedan to a race track for a day of fun or even to a drift school to learn how to shake your tail, it’s capable of doing so. This AMG lets you have your plush luxury cake and eat up a track day or two.

For us, that’s A-Okay.
