Camo’d AMG GT R Black Series Makes Rounds at the ‘Green Hell’
Heralding the return of the Black Series, newest spy video catches the GT R trying on aero kits, gathering data on the Nurburgring in Germany.
It’s been a few years since the last AMG Black Series model, the C63, left the showroom floor for the open road. The biggest stunner of the range, the SLS Black Series, lost some 154 pounds over the standard SLS, but also gained a 6.2-liter V8 with 622 horses and 468 lb-ft of torque under the hood, all linked to a repositioned seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Now, the Black Series is set to return to our roads, in the form of the AMG GT R Black Series, based on the already-badass AMG GT R. Dutch YouTuber who runs Automotive Mike recently visited the Nurburgring, where he caught the new hotness testing out some aero packages, plus gathering some data for the engineers back in Affalterbach.
“What’s up with the massive biplane spoiler on the decklid,” wrote the YouTuber in the description. “It’s nothing like the previous Black Series prototypes we’ve seen. For that matter, the front fascia sports several adjustable winglets that we haven’t seen before, either. Another interesting addition on this prototype are louvered vents in the front fenders, and they appear to draw straight from the AMG GT R Pro. As for the rear, let’s just say we highly doubt that’s a production-spec fascia, because janky doesn’t even begin to describe what we see there.”
Speaking of janky, the AMG GT R Black Series was caught at a few points wearing a full rig over the full length of the car. The rig had a camera pointed at each wheel, plus more placed on the hood and roof. We’re thinking the rig was collecting some telemetry data for further improvements to test the next time the car visits the Green Hell.
“It seems the folks from Affalterbach have visions of besting the Porsche 911 GT2 RS – a vehicle which can lap the Green Hell in just 6 minutes 40 seconds,” the YouTuber says. “Granted that’s a modified variant, but one doesn’t simply turn such a quick time with massive power alone.”
Whatever aero the AMG GT R Black Series does wear when it hits the showroom, it’ll likely be more than enough to keep the rumored 700 horses galloping from the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 firmly planted on the road.
