GT 4-door Coupe Gets Refreshed Styling, Tweaked Suspension
Refreshed Panamera-fighter offers room for five and the ability to rip off a 7:27 lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Mercedes-AMG is updating its GT 4-door Coupe for the 2022 model year. As of right now, it hasn’t released many details about the changes it’s made to the V8 models, but it has made it clear that some elements of those have made their way into the refreshed six-cylinder GT 43 and GT 53 cars. In this video, Felix Schönhofer, a Mercedes-AMG brand manager, gives us a closer look at some of those during his tour of the 2022 GT 4-door Coupe.
As you’d expect, the front and rear styling has been slightly revamped to distinguish the 2022 model from its predecessors. Starling Blue Metallic, MANUFAKTUR Starling Blue Magno and MANUFAKTUR Cashmere White Magno join the list of available colors. The GT that Schönhofer shows us around is the new MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Edition, a GT 53-based model which comes dressed in finished in Rubellite Red Metallic, the V8 Styling Package and Silver Chrome Exterior Package. Beneath that gemstone paint is a cabin lined with Neva Grey Exclusive Nappa Leather and Natural Grain Grey Ash Wood trim.
The available new AMG Night Package II adds a dark chrome grille and black front fender lettering and rear badging for what Schönhofer calls a “very dark and aggressive look.” There are new wheel options, as well, including a set of 20s with a 10-twin-spoke design and 21-inch forged wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design, but those are exclusive to the upcoming 63 S model, according to Mercedes. Schönhofer says, “Something that isn’t visible right away, but is also a very interesting detail feature is the brake calipers because for the first time ever, the six-cylinder model will also be able to get the red brake calipers.”
The changes to the GT’s suspension are even harder to see, but they should be easy to feel. U.S. V8-powered GTs will have an improved version of the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with “a new damping system with two individually operating valves, offering a very wide spread between comfort and sportiness.”
Inside, the new GT gets an enlarged pair of paddle shifters that sit a little lower behind a new AMG Performance steering wheel. Heating is optional on six-cylinder GTs, but standard on V8 models. The entire range of U.S. GTs comes equipped with the AMG Drive Unit button/dial combo for making performance adjustments on the go, as well as the surround-view camera setup.
Aside from new color choices, including diamond-stitched Auburn Brown/Black Exclusive Nappa Leather, the biggest change to the GT’s seats is in the second row. Mercedes-AMG now offers U.S.-market GT 4-door Coupes with a bench in the back that can seat three and, when necessary, fold flat to make carrying larger items easier.
The 2022 GT 4-door Coupe will be in dealerships sometime later this year. In the meantime, we’ll be waiting for more information on the refreshed V8-powered cars.
