The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe lives up to its name thanks to a growth spurt and more creature comforts.

The Mercedes-AMG GT has traditionally represented the peak of style and performance from the sportier offshoot of the German automaker, a car that looks and goes equally well. However, when it came time to give the two-door model a redesign, MB wanted to delve more into the grand touring side of the model’s namesake, making it both more luxurious and more practical at the same time. That’s precisely what they’ve accomplished with the new 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, which borrows heavily from the also quite-new SL.

On the outside, this process began with a fairly significant exterior design revamp, one that gives the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe a a cleaner overall look. It’s also larger than its predecessor by a total of 7.1 inches in length and 1.6 inches in width, which translates to more interior space as well. In fact, customers can opt for a pair of fold-down rear seats if they wish, giving two small passengers space to ride along – if they can fit.

Mechanically speaking, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe has ditched rear-wheel-drive layout for a standard all-wheel-drive configuration, while power is provided by the familiar twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. In this guise, the engine churns out either 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque for the GT55 or 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet in the GT63, which sends power to the wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission that’s now mounted behind the engine – not in the rear like its predecessor – along with an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential.

Underneath, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT coupe utilizes adaptive dampers and a semi-active hydraulically linked suspension to get around corners, along with optional carbon ceramic brakes, with either standard 20-inch or optional 21-inch wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Sport S5 rubber.

The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe has clearly take a philosophical turn, giving customers a bit more practicality than the old model, though that could be a good thing or bad thing depending on what kind of performance coupe one prefers. It’s certainly better positioned to compete with its traditional rival, the Porsche 911, though some will undoubtedly scoff at the fact that it has lost a bit of its edge, while also likely gaining some weight. Regardless, we imagine that anyone seeking a better grand touring GT will certainly find these changes to be quite welcome.
