One of just 146 produced, this stunning 1928 Mercedes-Benz Sports Tourer is going up for grabs at auction.

These days, modern vehicles – at least from the 1980s and up – are all the rage. Modern classics have struck a chord with folks that grew up over the last two or three decades, and rightfully so. But we still have a soft spot for vehicles built during the golden ages of the 1920s and 1930s, when big, luxurious, and extravagant cars roamed the earth. Cars like this amazing 1928 Mercedes-Benz Sports Tourer that’s going up for grabs at Bonham’s Quail Lodge Auction, taking place August 13.

Unlike some other automakers, by the time Mercedes built this particular machine, it already had decades of automotive production experience under its belt. At a time when Ferdinand Porsche was chief engineer and the press was fawning over it, MB’s “S” Sport model was all the rage, and for good reason. This was a car that could hit the track and record impressive times, then go back to the road and bathe its occupants in luxury and comfort.

Cars like this 1928 Mercedes-Benz Sports Tourer were rare when they were assembled and are even rarer today. Just 146 examples of this flagship machine were built in total, and most of them were owned by celebrities and others with ample amounts of fame and wealth. But as amazing as the car looks, the real star of the show lies under its hood – a supercharged 6.8-liter six-cylinder capable of making as much as 180 horsepower, a truly impressive figure for its time.

This particular S remained with the same family for almost six decades but it hasn’t been coddled too much, as it has seen racing action as recently as 2015 when it competed in the Colorado Grand. The car was restored in 1968 and refinished again in 2016 after it was passed down from the original owner to his children. It hasn’t even been shown publically since its last redo years ago, so merely watching this vintage Mercedes cross the block will be something special.

Bringing it home will require a bit more effort and a lot more money, however, as this S carries an auction estimate of $3-$4 million. But cars like this don’t come up for sale very often, especially ones that have such an impressive ownership history.
