1958 Mercedes 300 SL Roadster Heads to Auction
This super-clean, gorgeous red convertible should produce lots of drool and a hefty price at Mecum Las Vegas.
If you’ve got deep pockets, you might be digging into the bottom of them. This Fire Engine Red 1958 Mercedes 300SL Convertible is headed up for auction at Mecum Las Vegas in November. We don’t have to tell you how stunning this example looks.
Listed as one of the auction’s ‘Main Attractions’, this represents just one of 324 Roadsters built in 1958. With a recent repaint job, this 300SL will turn heads with its Fire Engine Red finish. And, y’know, the fact that it’s a gorgeous and timeless classic.
The restoration includes some replacement pieces, like the leather seats and top. The color mismatch will likely hurt the price a bit, but they match well enough with the interior and still look fabulous. The restoration also includes a white hard top and even a restored factory tool kit.
The legendary canted-over 3.0-liter inline-six engine powers this car. With fuel injection and 9.5:1 compression, the famous six knocked out around 250 horsepower. That represents a fantastic figure for the ‘50s and explained much of the cars success in events like the Carrera Panamericana.
This particular car carries some interesting provenance. Its original owner bought the car and had it delivered to Caracas, Venezuela. It lived its entire life in South America until 2014, when it moved to a new home stateside.
In its short time here, it’s undergone restoration on the aforementioned pieces. In addition, a 300SL specialist has sorted through its mechanical, suspension, and brake components.
Hagerty’s estimates on Gullwing Roadsters extend well into seven figures. This one isn’t all original, of course, but we think it’ll draw a healthy sum from one of the serious collectors. We wonder where it fits without the iconic Gullwing doors. We know it looks like a million bucks, at least.
