What’s Up in the Forums: Restored 2002 G500 Looks ‘Better-than-New’

Rough G500 Front

Unloved G-Wagen gets a new lease on life with parts from several newer Mercedes models.

Today we bring you what might be the most elaborate restoration we have ever seen of a vehicle as new as this 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500. What seemingly started off as a project to beef up a beat up G-wagon has turned into an incredible two-year restoration that has introduced an endless list of new components – including parts from several newer Benz models, a hand-made leather interior layout and a long of new small parts. As a result, when this Mercedes SUV project is complete, it will be a far more luxurious machine than it was when it rolled off of the assembly line 16 years ago.

Introduction

This incredible 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500 restoration thread was started back in March of 2016 and over the past 26 months, forum member Kobzarhomes has nearly transformed this G-wagon into an entirely-new vehicle.

This was the post that started the thread back in 2016:

“Hello everyone.
Couple months ago I picked up this 2002 Mercedes G500 for a very good price. Car needs some TLC, it’s exactly what I was looking for. Over the next few months I am going to be repairing it, restoring it and updating it with 2016 G63 parts that I purchased from a forum member on here 👍😊.

I already took it apart and I apologize that I didn’t take pictures off it right when I got it.

As you can see I already took off the front end, front axle, front suspension, exhaust, remove fender flares and rear bumper. My goal is to take it apart as much as I can, do some body repair and detail the undercarriage. I’m going to sand and soda blast the rust spots underneath and paint them with rust resistant paint.

I will try to post as much as I can on here.”

He also included the first few shots here of a 2002 Benz SUV that clearly had not been well-loved by its previous owners, but it was about to get a new lease on life. It sounded like the OP planned to clean up the body and underpinnings to recreate a great daily driver, but as the 31-page thread reveals – this has turned out to be a far more elaborate project than we initially expected. Because the thread is so long and the restoration process is so detailed, we have grouped the recap of this project into three groups – interior, body and undercarriage.

Move on to the next page to continue reading about this gorgeous G-Wagen.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
