E-Class Coupe rides the line between luxury and sporty.

When Roadshow reviewer Andrew Krok saw the new E-Class Coupe, he immediately noticed how much the overall look of the car has changed over the last year. Apparently, he wasn’t a fan of last year’s model, since it was built on a C-Class platform. But this year is different. During his time with the new 2018 E400 Coupe, he came to love the combination of technology, luxury, and performance.

“Thankfully, the all-new 2018 E-Class Coupe makes up for that in spades, offering everything great about the E-Class in a form that’s not only luxurious and tech-heavy, but also fun to drive,” said Krok in his recent review.

First things first, Krok loved how the car looks. He doesn’t mind that there are bits and pieces borrowed from other Mercedes-Benz models. Basically, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Obviously, the inside is beautiful. With the luxurious seats and the ample amounts of technology, Krok just loved every bit of it. One thing he was quick to note is how the new design offers an added bonus – more legroom!

“A good deal of the increased interior volume went to expanding rear-seat space, which was ample for a 6-foot-tall passenger sitting behind a 6-foot-tall driver, with both legroom and headroom to spare,” said Krok.

Unlike the E-Class sedan, the E400 Coupe is only available with one engine type, a 3.0-liter V6 with 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Not too shabby at all. “It hustles along with a bit of engine noise in tow, but not enough to cause a scene or irritate a driver who wants to sit back and relax,” said Krok.

Let’s be honest, if you are buying this E-Class Coupe, you’re wanting to see how well this car performs. Luckily, the car offers multiple modes to switch from, depending on what sort of driving you’re interested in doing. Comfort mode does exactly what you’d expect. Sport mode is where it gets really interesting, however. There’s even a Sport Plus mode that Krok describes as “a bit over the top.” Overall, he is a fan of how each mode feels on the road. There’s also a fourth mode, but he’s not completely over the moon about it. “If you simply must maximize your MPGs, there’s an Eco mode, but it’s boring as all get-out and should only be used in the case of an ‘I forgot to fill up and I’m 50 miles from the nearest gas pump’ emergency,” said Krok.

Like any luxury car, there are options available to further add comfort and convenience to your ride. One such upgrade is a necessity, apparently. Krok “implores” you to purchase the air suspension upgrade for $1,900, “In Comfort mode, the air suspension is pillow-soft, soaking up bumps as it floats along. Move it to Sport, and the ride is still cushy, but it catches body roll early and keeps the car feeling planted as the roads get curvier and curvier.

Overall, Krok was very complimentary of the new E-Class Coupe, making it seem like the perfect choice for those looking for luxury, but with the option to really have a little extra fun on the road.

Krok concludes: “Nevertheless, the E400 Coupe is impressive. It’s equally comfortable as a long-haul grand tourer and a spry, sporty coupe, depending on the vehicle’s mode. Its technological complement is second to none, and it’s easy like Sunday morning on the eyes.”
