2019 G-Class Drives Through Insane Amount of Water Unscathed

By -

Even 27 inches of water can’t hold it back. Is there anything the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG G-Class can’t do?

Don’t be fooled by appearances: The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is all new. Sure, it may look a lot like its predecessor (thankfully), but inside and out, it’s completely different from the truck that made its debut a full 40 years ago. And in this recent video from Youtubers Alpha SQUAD, we get a rundown of the new truck’s features.

Hosted by metal fabricator/off-road racer Jessi Combs, we get a full tour of the new SUV in the south of France. The new LED headlights are an instant giveaway that this isn’t your grandfather’s G-Wagen. And of course, the widescreen dash and updated interior make it a perfect fit in Mercedes’ 2019 lineup. It’s longer and wider too, meaning there’s plenty of room all around. But after going over the exterior of the new Merc, she hops in the AMG variant and takes it on – and off – road.

AMG vs. G500

Jessi loves the power and sound of the 585 horsepower twin-turbo V8, and the quick shifts of the nine-speed automatic transmission. But to her, Sport+ makes the big SUV “more agile, and way more fun to drive.” Add in the three driving modes, and “all of this makes the G63 unsurpassed in direct ground connection to the pavement as well as to off-road terrain.”

Then she swaps the AMG for a G500 and takes it off-road. The solid rear axle remains, but the front now features an independent suspension. Still, with a ground clearance of 31 centimeters (over one foot) and a 31-degree approach angle, the G-Class isn’t losing any ground off-road. Literally – the truck still has its trademark three locking differentials. What’s more, you can use the 360-degree camera to monitor your surroundings as you climb hills as steep as 45 degrees.

If you’re going down a steep hill, the G-Wagen will engine brake perfectly if you manually shift it into first gear. No accelerating, no braking, it does it on its own. For her final tests, Jessi takes the SUV through some serious mud and water. The truck can handle depths up to 27 inches, and that’s without a snorkel or any aftermarket add-ons.

We’ve known the facts about the new G-Series for about a year now. But it’s impressive seeing Jessi take the iconic SUV and put it through its paces. Not only does it live up to its name, but it’s the perfect blend of power, performance, and luxury. As Jessi says, the G-Class is “stronger than time.” To our knowledge, we don’t think there’s any other car out there that can claim that.
