Latest Mercedes G-Class Shows Off-road Prowess

By -

Sure, the all-new G-Class is an amazing street vehicle. But has it lost any of its legendary off-road luster?

Since day one, the Mercedes G-Class has carried a reputation for being a competent off-road vehicle. Even if the vast majority of owners would never dream of leaving the pavement in their boxy, ultra-luxury SUVs, they could sleep easy at night knowing it was fully capable of taking them wherever they might want to go. But now that the G-Class has received its first major redesign in 40 years, many wondered it that might change.

To find out, YouTuber JerryRigEverything accepted an invite for a 300-plus mile road trip through parts of France and Spain. And we aren’t just talking about some comfy highway journey full of air guitar solos and questionable snack choices. Mercedes didn’t just allow the crew to test the G-Class in some pretty extreme off-road conditions. They encouraged it. And why not? This thing does have not one, not two, but three locking differentials.

And like any proper luxury ‘ute, the G-Class has loads of high-tech goodies that help make off-roading a snap. Heading uphill, our host points out the camera which gives you a shot of the earth in front of you, which isn’t otherwise visible at this kind of angle. But perhaps the coolest thing about the new G-Class is the fact that the doors are water-tight, which keeps both sound and the wet stuff out of the cabin.

An impressive feat, indeed. While we knew that Mercedes was planning to thoroughly modernize the G-Class, we wouldn’t have blamed them for forgoing its legendary off-road capability just a touch. After all, few customers would dare take their rides past the (relatively) safe confines of the local mall parking lot. But it’s nice to know that you still can, if you so desire.
