Hardcore off-road version of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG G-Class looks like it will be fully revealed very soon.

A number of 2022 Mercedes AMG G-Class 4×4 Squared prototypes have been spied testing in recent months, but those models have largely been covered in heavy camo that conceals any upcoming styling changes. That certainly isn’t the case with this latest sighting from YouTuber KindelAuto, however. In fact, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4 captured in the video below only makes a feeble attempt to hide its fender flares, roof, and spare tire cover, but it certainly isn’t effective.

That half-hearted effort is a good thing for those of us that are eager to see the latest version of the most hardcore G-Class variant, of course. Clearly, we can see that this later prototype version of the SUV rides much higher than anything in the current G-Class lineup, and this prototype is wearing a new, unique set of wheels wrapped in beefy off-road tires.

There’s a long-travel suspension tucked up underneath, as well as portal axles, all of which should make the new “Squared” version of the G-Class a monster off-road. Other notable features include a massive roof rack and a ladder out back designed to help access it.

The biggest mystery surrounding the next-gen version of the 4×4 squared is what, exactly, will power it. The previous model came equipped with Mercedes’ twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, which produced 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Many expect the automaker to take things a step further this time around and give the Squared the G63‘s version of that same engine, which cranks out a much stouter 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque and would make it that much more enticing of an offering.

It’s unclear exactly when the 2022 Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4 might be revealed in full, but given the fact that we’ve seen numerous, now barely-covered prototypes in recent months, it will likely be sooner rather than later. The new rugged off-roader could be unveiled before the end of 2021, in fact, given the fact that it seems Mercedes is merely ironing out the final details and dialing in its hardcore G-Wagon. In the meantime, we’ll be eagerly anticipating its arrival and dreaming of its potential.
