$57,515 Repair Estimate Makes R63 AMG Famous

This R63 Is Internet Famous Due to an Absurdly-High Repair Bill, and a Very Ambitious Owner

Audible fireworks that emit from the M156 are a huge part of its appeal. Placing that overflow of power into an R-Class is just the type of madness we like. Apparently, that sentiment also fits Grassroots Motorsports forum user, Mazdeuce. Mazdeuce bought a high-mileage R63 example, and had been enjoying it, right up to the point where he didn’t.

After a coolant light came on the dashboard, Mazdeuce discovered the bad news that coolant had somehow leaked into the oil. In fact, that is the only place where it leaked. After getting the car towed to a local Mercedes dealer for a proper diagnosis, he was shocked to find the entire engine needed a rebuild. If you haven’t seen the cost of this service, please sit down. The estimate for repairs came to $57,515.

Given Mazdeuce’s mechanical inclinations, he decided to forego that lofty repair bill. He would just do an engine tear-down and rebuild from home. The GRM thread covers everything you would want to know about the process.

As an aside, this highlights one issue with the M156 engine that could almost be seen as preventative maintenance. We have a list of threads covering what can be done to prevent it from happening, as well, important signs to look out for, just in case this sad fortune befalls your ’63.
